IRS Matter No Longer Mere Scandal – Nation’s Integrity as a Republic at Stake

This from Ed Morrissey writing at Hot Air.

The IRS announced last night — after a subpoena from House Oversight chair Darrell Issa — that Lois Lerner’s hard drive had been either “thrown away” or recycled, which means at least for the moment that none of her interagency e-mails can be recovered:

What. A. Coincidence! Much of Lerner’s intra-agency e-mail correspondence (that is, within the IRS) has been reconstituted through searches of others’ e-mails. However, Issa and Ways and Means chair Dave Camp specifically wanted the communications between Lerner and others outside the IRS — especially any potential e-mails between Lerner and the Department of Justice and the White House. Those e-mails, if they existed, might tend to shed some light on who ordered Lerner to conduct extra scrutiny of conservative tax-exempt applicants, and how high up the coordination went.

Without backups or the drives, those communications have been lost. Unless Lerner testifies, which she has so far refused to do, or unless the House subpoenas all executive-branch e-mails, they’re likely lost forever.

Mainstream media coverage of the initial revelation that Lerner’s subpoenaed e-mails to and from outside agencies during a key time period were lost to a computer glitch was scant at best. Kyle Drennen of Newsbuster reports  “Only CBS Covers IRS Losing Two Years of Lois Lerner Email

. . . Neither NBC’s Today nor ABC’s Good Morning America bothered to cover the shocking development. However, both broadcasts did manage to find time for full reports on Britain’s baby Prince George learning to walk.

On (CBS) This Morning, correspondent Nancy Cordes cited the IRS’s explanation of the mysterious loss of evidence:

The IRS has turned over some, but on Friday, in a letter to Congress, the IRS said it had determined “that Ms. Lerner’s computer crashed in 2011,” and that, “any of Ms. Lerner’s email that was only stored on that computer’s hard drive would have been lost”….House Government Oversight chairman Darrell Issa says the government spends millions every year to back up emails on servers, but the IRS says before May of 2013, “these backups were retained on tape for six months,” and then got recycled.

Near the end of the segment, a clip played of Cordes asking Issa: “IRS says they’ve already turned over something like 67,000 emails to and from Lois Lerner. Isn’t that enough?” Issa pushed back: “This is not about what you turn over. It is all about what you don’t turn over.”

Commentary from  Veritaspac.com:

I agree with Rush. Actually Rush agrees with me. Obama has long ago passed the tipping point. The GOP is unable, unwilling, almost comically incapable of stopping the Executive branch’s lawlessness. Fast and Furious, Benghazi, the Bergdahl trade, disregard of War Powers Act over Libya, the Obamacare fiasco,   the VA debacle, the wiretapping of journalists, the many illegal acts associated with illegal immigration , many others, but the most serious and egregious is the IRS. The Administration demonstrates utter contempt for the American people and the sneering indifference to a corrupt media. To just announce all key evidence in a very serious legal matter is not available and has been destroyed would be rejected as bad fantasy in a movie by a society which does not already feel subjugated.   DLH

Total and immediate compliance to House subpoenas must be adhered to by IRS officials and entire Obama White House. A Special Prosecutor should be named immediately to investigate all agencies involved with the power to request search warrants. Confiscation in compliance with such warrants is in order to prevent obstruction of justice.   R Mall
