In an ironic way this Piers Morgan criticism of the Pope is the sort of thing that might help carry our point that the Pope bloviates (to use one of your buddy O’Reilly’s favorite words) before thinking. Will it induce liberal pacifists to get the point?

The Pope was goofy because for a pope he did not say enough so as not to be misconstrued, careless. The later aspect another point that should teach him that every flamboyant utterance gets reported, whether he likes it or not, so he should stifle himself.
Then again maybe we should welcome his flamboyance and the exposure of his superficiality on so much. Helps make the point that bloviating even at length on matters he has shown no due diligence about (economics) is still bullshit. I don’t know.

Actually I think he does know what he is saying and what the effect will be. The media has made him a rock star and the Marxist ideology he shares has encouraged the left and really inflated his ego. The mutual affection for each and their disdain for free markets and the USA, will serve to provide Obama with a great ally among the more naive Christians and Catholics. (And believe me, I know a few of them.)

In your more sophisticated way of thinking about him, the “punch in the nose” thing was an effort to chastise not the liberal left, which makes excuses for radical Islam anyway, but to lend credence to them. Yep I get it. That is more significant. But it does have a bit of a “shock” for one element of the left, the uber pacifist types as opposed to the one world types (Pope) which ultimately are or invite authoritarianism.
