Events this day in history refute radical secularists

  • Washington Christian or Deist?
  • Washington’s demeanor in office
  • Compare to Obama’s

This post is occasioned by our reflection on reminders sent our way — –  that on this day in history George Washington took the oath of office in the nation’s first capitol and delivered the first inauguration address by an American president.

From History.com  New York 1789

In front of 10,000 spectators, Washington appeared in a plain brown broadcloth suit holding a ceremonial army sword. At 6′ 3, Washington presented an impressive and solemn figure as he took the oath of office . . .  kissed the bible and then went to the Senate chamber to deliver his inaugural address.

Observers noted that Washington appeared as if he would have preferred facing cannon and musket fire to taking the political helm of the country. He fidgeted, with his hand in one pocket, and spoke in a low, sometimes inaudible voice while he reiterated the mixed emotions of anxiety and honor he felt in assuming the role of president.  . . .  In deference to the power of Congress, Washington promised to give way to my entire confidence in your discernment and pursuit of the public good.

After delivering his address, Washington walked up Broadway with a group of legislators and local political leaders to pray at St. Paul’s Chapel. Later, he made the humble and astute observation that his presidency, and the nation itself, was an experiment.

From Wall Builders.com (excerpts)

There were seven separate religious activities as part of his inauguration?

Both Christian and Jewish leaders planned his inauguration

Washington initiated America’s first War on Terror against Muslim terrorists.

Washington was a vestryman of Pohick church, an Episcopal Church often called the “Mother Church of Northern Virginia” for founding new churches as the territory expanded. (Find out more about his religious habits here and here ).

Constitutional experts abounded at America’s first inauguration. Not only was the first inauguree (George Washington) a signer of the Constitution but numerous drafters of the Constitution were serving in the Congress that organized and directed that first inauguration. In fact, just under one fourth of the members of the first Congress had been delegates to the Convention that wrote the Constitution. 3 Furthermore, the identical Congress that directed and oversaw these inaugural activities also penned the First Amendment. Having therefore produced both the

Constitution and all of its clauses on religion, they clearly knew what types of religious activities were and were not constitutional. Clearly, then, the religious activities that occurred at the first inauguration may well be said to have the approval and imprimatur of the greatest collection of constitutional experts America has ever known. Therefore, a review of the religious activities acceptable in that first inauguration will provide guidance for citizens in general and critics in particular.

Compare Washington to President Barack Obama’s demeanor in his official capacity when “on stage” and the  judgement shown by his official representatives:
