Cruz picks up more Iowa support

One announcement coincides with resignation

Congressman Steve King announced earlier in the week his endorsement of Senator Ted Cruz for the Republican presidential nomination.  While no two genuinely conservative political activists apply conservatism the same or see the same on every issue, in broad terms, on the most timely and important issues, in their sense of urgency on key matters Cruz and King are a very good fit. Conservatives activists trust King and his endorsement means that he trusts Cruz as the real thing.

Just announced today, Republican Party of Iowa (RPI) State Central Committee member Loras Schulte, a friend of mine from right to life activism, announced he has resigned from the State Central Committee to endorse Ted Cruz.

It is a great catch for Cruz but brings up the matter of the necessity of the rule or understanding that RPI Stae Central Committee members resign in order to publicly endorse a candidate.  At the level of dispersion of power and influence of Central Committee members  — there are sixteen — four from each congressional district — the resignation requirement it seems to me is an overreaction to allegations of conflicts of interest and is no guarantee of neutrality.  Officers and most staff, yes, for reasons of appearances and more,  but resignations of what would be akin to ordinary board members, should not be required as long as rules and bylaws and timely mechanisms of transparency are built in to prevent bias.  More on this later.
