Lady Liberty is not a fool

Lady Liberty was conceived in honor of republicanism, not immigration

Screen Shot 2015-11-20 at 12.03.58 PMThere are many elements swirling around the entire Syrian refugee issue. I agree that Congressman Steve King’s vote against the bill was the right move and his explanation for it makes far more sense than anything the GOP leadership is doing or has done on virtually every serious issue they’ve faced.

Another interesting aspect of this legislative kabuki was revealed this morning on CNN. Tulsi Gabbard, (D-HI) was interviewed by the Obama/Democrat “operative” (our opinion), Chris Cuomo. Congressperson Gabbard was very impressive as to why she voted for the bill. Cuomo had taken her vote as an almost sacreligious defiance of her “president”. Ms. Gabbard destroyed him with her point-by-point rationale. It was understandably couched in some of the “Democratic party mythology”, with obligatory reference to Bush involvement in the current foreign policy disaster. Nevertheless it was clear that Gabbard does not hold President Obama’s performance in the current foreign affairs disaster in high regard.

In addition to being arguably the most attractive lady in Congress, Ms. Gabbard is a military veteran with service in the Middle east War zones. She is not a doctrinaire far left Democrat and often sounds as though she somehow has found herself in the wrong party.

Another point in all this which became apparent this morning is that the Wall Street Journal, apparently so much in favor of virtually open borders, illegal immigrant amnesty, and, as the GOPe mouthpiece, launched an attack on Ted Cruz (the antithesis of the Journal’s positions) with a column by Kim Strassel assailing Cruz for his vote against NSA and his efforts in opposition to Obamacare. It was scathing and quite misleading, all in support, we think, of Marco Rubio in case the WSJ’s favorite, JEB, doesn’t make it. For good measure the Journal’s editorial also attacked Cruz and Rand Paul for their NSA stance.

Note: It occurs to us that the expansion of data collection on American citizens should be a grave concern to all. An administration who has demonstrated a frightening willingness to “weaponize” virtually every agency of the federal government (IRS, DOJ, BLM, ATF, EPA, etc, etc) is not somebody the American people should trust to conduct “surveillance” on every citizen 24/7!

And there’s this from the Veritaspac commentary:

“In the case of Loebsack and Bustos you can almost hear them checking with Harry for his assurance that “this won’t really happen, will it?” — which he assured him it would not.”

I doubt it was necessary for these two “peoples’ representatives” to seek assurance from Harry. I believe they were completely assured by Nancy before they were ever permitted to vote on the bill.

Just one additional observation:

This tired tactic by the GOP establishment/congressional leadership is becoming very dangerous. These “standalone” bills in the face of certain veto or subsequent upholding of, to protect the fearful Republicans from being accused of “shutting down government” takes on a new aspect in this case. With this “doomed-to-fail” measure, it puts the GOP in the position of needing a calamitous event occurring between now and the ’16 election so they may exclaim “see!”.

That’s not a stance I want to see taken by politicians I’m supposed to support. Either Speaker Ryan uses the power of the purse to stop the incredibly hazardous actions of this administration or he must step aside for someone who will.                 DLH
