Paul Bedard reports at The Washington Examiner:
68% of jailed illegals have prior U.S. criminal records
“Despite a funding cut-off threat from the Justice Department, over 300 so-called “sanctuary cities” are protecting thousands of illegal criminal immigrants from federal arrest and deportation, according to a new analysis.
“The Center for Immigration Studies on Wednesday published a new interactive map identifying the cities, towns and counties that have so far protected at least 17,000 criminal illegals instead of handing them over to federal authorities.”
“Despite a funding cut-off threat from the Justice Department…”
Yeah? What Justice Department is that? Does anybody think that the Obama/Loretta Lynch Justice Department would ‘cut off funds’ from “sanctuary cities”?
This is one occasion on which the GOP Congressional leadership…Paul Ryan in particular…would finally rise up in opposition to an Obama administration “initiative”.
If the Justice Department were actually serious about “cutting off funding”, which it is not of course, we all are aware that Speaker Ryan led the House in passing a budget as fast as he could which provided Obama funding for everything he needed to carry out his final year destructive agenda. And that included “funding” sanctuary cities.
Come on! Who’s fooling whom? While suing Arizona for its law upholding US immigration law which prohibits actions which are routinely taken by sanctuary cities, the Obama administration was actively supporting these illegal “entities”.
The following jurisdictions in Iowa are listed at the Center for Immigration Studies as providing sanctuary. Looking at the map as a whole, we get the impression Iowa sanctuary participation is quite extensive. Iowas two most populous counties (in blue below with their Iowa population ranking) and several more of the top ten most populous ( in orange) are part of the 23 listed. Anyone want to bet as to whether these counties are dominated by Democrats?
Iowa
Allamakee County, Benton County, Cass County, Clinton County, Delaware County,
Dubuque County (7), Franklin County, Freemont County, Greene County, Ida County,
Iowa County, Jefferson County, Johnson County (4), Linn County(2), Marion County,
Monona County, Montgomery County, Polk County (1), Pottawattamie County (9), Sioux County, Story County (8) , Wapello County, Winneshiek County
What does being a “sanctuary” imply? According to the Center for Immigration Studies:
These cities, counties, and states have laws, ordinances, regulations, resolutions, policies, or other practices that obstruct immigration enforcement and shield criminals from ICE — either by refusing to or prohibiting agencies from complying with ICE detainers, imposing unreasonable conditions on detainer acceptance, denying ICE access to interview incarcerated aliens, or otherwise impeding communication or information exchanges between their personnel and federal immigration officers.
A detainer is the primary tool used by ICE to gain custody of criminal aliens for deportation. It is a notice to another law enforcement agency that ICE intends to assume custody of an alien and includes information on the alien’s previous criminal history, immigration violations, and potential threat to public safety or security.
We support Iowa’s home rule provisions for counties and municipalities as regards Iowa law. But the limitations are clear. It cannot be assumed in response to clearly established state laws or in an area clearly subsumed by state law. And regardless, that authority should not be used to create costs for the rest of the state and federal tax payers. Immigration is an area that especially the federal government controls and states may have a roll. Counties and municipalities as to law enforcement, other than in the exercise of legitimate home rule authority, are agents of the state. The state should do its duty and make and enforce statutes against harboring illegal aliens and clear malfeasance by jurisdictions. The federal government should enforce this country’s immigration laws.

It has always fascinated me that we hear all the talk about the need for “comprehensive immigration reform”. Our government “leadership”…both sides of the aisle constantly harp on our “broken” immigration system.
Our “broken immigration system”…indeed! What is it exactly that “broke it”?
Easy. The Washington establishment… phony ‘conservative’ Republicans, liberal Democrats simply disregarded and/or deliberately supported the breaking, of our immigration laws for decades.
My question, and one that American voters should be asking, is, “what is the point of passing laws if the very people who enact them and those who are obliged to enforce them are the same ones who happily break them at will?”
How will that change with a “comprehensive immigration bill”? As soon as the executive branch or the next congressional majority decides they don’t like the new law, or some part of it, they’ll simply ignore it as they have current law.
