Average. That’s me. My name should’ve been Joe. Average Joe. Finished school, got a job. Married, kids, bought a house. Paid bills, taxes, and father time. Always considered myself open-minded. Knew the difference between right and wrong, even when doing wrong. Liked to be outrageous now and then. Had a little fun. Accumulated six decades of life experience. Formed opinions, established values. Nothing really special in that whole mix. Just average.
America elects a new president and before he even gets started, many self-appointed betters tell the world that Trump voters, myself and millions of average people, are uneducated, angry, and afraid. Protesters call us much worse.
I’d say to them, “There’s a difference between educated and intelligent. I’ve known many smart, successful, people who never set foot in a college classroom. Maybe they meant unindoctrinated.”
I don’t really have a temper. The last time I was really mad was when that guy cut chow line in basic. Still the pundits keep calling me angry. Now, I’m not enraged, just spurred. Average people aren’t haters. They are busy living. They don’t have the time. The real rage I see is in the eyes above those black masks the rioters wear. Nobody in the media’s calling them out. The average guy wants to avoid the fire and brimstone, the anarchists revel in it.
The average person isn’t scared, just concerned. For their country. For their kid’s future. They see their culture losing civility. Disdain for free speech running rampant. Courts are disregarding the law. Rioting’s now defined as dissent. Disregard for human life is everywhere. People want it to stop.
We see an economy that has thrown the average guy away. If you’re a genius, you’ll be fine. What of the average person? Maybe not college material, but willing to get up every day and put some sweat equity into the world. Do we want our country set up so that the average citizen is ignored, left to fight over scraps with masses of illegals undercutting their wages? Do we want an economy where the job choices are Goldman Sachs, Microsoft, or Hardees? Where members of the “Good ol’ boys club” live like kings, and the rest scratch shit with the chickens? Think about it. We did.
We’re not prudes, we’ve “been around”. Take a look at our world. Television, media and pop culture well past the boundaries of basic decency. The DC women’s rally was a sewer. Dr. King’s Dream traded for Ashley Judd’s nightmare. When vulgar becomes normal, vulgarity must be redefined. Down. Can we go lower and still call ourselves civilized?
Our “Betters” may not approve, but these are legitimate points of view, held by millions of average people. Mostly invisible, they don’t start fires and hurt others, but they’re there. They voted. The left’s intimidation and violence aren’t changing their minds.
We won the election. We see a shot at a better deal. We ain’t letting it get away.
Not if we can help it.
