The Battle Over Borders
Congress is facing a Friday deadline to pass key spending bills to fund the government. If they don’t approve these appropriations bills, we are headed toward another temporary government shutdown on April 28th.
Listening to the media, you’d think widows and orphans were going to starve if the government shuts down. None of the talking heads ever tell viewers that the government has shut down 18 times since 1976.
But here’s the real reason it could happen Friday — Democrats are unwilling to put up even $1 dollar to fund President Trump’s border wall. President Trump’s message to Senate Democrats should be what Barack Obama told Republicans in 2009: “I won.”
If the government is shut down, it is hard to imagine an issue more damaging to the left. I can imagine Trump going on national television saying something like this:
“Senate progressives are so committed to the radical idea of open borders, meaning no borders really, that they would rather shut down the government than secure our borders. Their open borders ideology has allowed vicious MS-13 gang members, and who knows who else, to walk into the country and threaten our children with drugs and violence. If it takes a government shutdown to draw attention to the issue of border security, so be it.”
Pro-Life Purge
The Democrat Party appears to be in the process of purging pro-life voters and office holders. Late Friday afternoon, DNC Chairman Tom Perez issued the following statement: “Every Democrat, like every American, should support a woman’s right to make her own choices about her body and her health. That is not negotiable. . .”
Perez’s statement came in response to loud opposition from pro-abortion groups who objected to Bernie Sanders’ endorsing a pro-life Democrat candidate for mayor of Omaha, Nebraska. That candidate quickly changed his tune last week and now promises to “never restrict access” to abortion.
While the left-wing media routinely portray Republicans as “extremists” on the issue of abortion, the reality is the exact opposite. Democrats are so extreme that they refuse to protect babies born alive after botched abortions. There isn’t one abortion they oppose — not late-term abortions or even sex-selection abortions.
The left’s extreme abortion-on-demand view is rejected by the vast majority of Americans. In fact, 28% of Democrats consider themselves pro-life.
For the life of me, I don’t understand how any pro-life voter could be a Democrat. But if the party of Clinton and Obama, Sanders and Warren is serious about purging pro-life voters from its ranks, I am happy to welcome them to the Grand Old Party, the party of Lincoln, Reagan and Trump — the party of life!
On this score, we have worked the streets and encountered a lot of Democrats over the years in positions of leadership and the rank and file (particularly blue collar “traditional” Democrats as dominated our lineage). As to elected Democrats we would not trust an assurance of being “pro-life” further than we could throw them. It has invariably in the political policy realm been a useless affectation intended as some sort of sop.
On anything of importance in the last thirty years, like key amendments to legislation, with the rarest of exceptions they have been perfidious or pathetically caved. And the rarer one who appeared to do the right thing on occasion for the right to life, had previously or subsequently made it impossible to be effectual as they invariably give the keys to the government to ardent pro-abortion Democrats leadership who they even champion in the process. Religion, often used as a subterfuge to claim pro-life bonafides is a phony personal shield. Underneath they are Democrats-first in pursuit of the emoluments for being a ‘good Democrat’ resulting in the propagation of the party of abortion. R Mall
