Noonan calls for more statues*
Peggy Noonan makes the case for why America desperately needs her eloquence
Ms. Noonan, who never forgave Republican presidents for overlooking her rhetorical gifts and how it was actually she who made Ronald Reagan a halfway decent orator.
Poor G W Bush could have been seen as a pretty good Chief Executive if he’d had the wisdom to bring her into his administration.
And, my goodness, only Peggy could save Donald Trump’s presidency! She will, however, be content to snipe from the sidelines and accept heaps of praise from the left for her regular criticisms of him.
Deep down, of course, Noonan really believed Obama was her guy, and, only occasionally did her second of two faces slip to reveal that fact.

Trump’s Tangle of Rhetorical Inadequacy
A gifted leader might make the case for building more statues rather than tearing down the ones we have. (Wall Street Journal, August 19, 2017 – paywall)
That Ms Noonan does not want Confederate statues torn down is commendable even if she happens to suggest that her view is super-sophisticated (see article). For most people it does not require her super-sophisitcation. Most people do not want Confederate commenorative statues torn down and Trump in his words did not fail them in any way. Ms Noonan for all her devotion to rhetoric fails to understand that a great leader is well understood by the people. Most people understand that Trump was saying supporters of keeping the remembrances include good people along with those who want them torn down.
Trump was also on solid ground to suggest that the violence was from both camps. Arguably it was then obvious and is now well documented that the opponents were itching for a fight, to confront people who had a permit to be in the park, who had a reservation in other words. White nationalist’s right to free speech, as reprehensible as much of it is, is no less so than we see elements of the left spew in their efforts to denigrate America. Pardon our fighting words but a Nazi is the moral equivalent of the police state socialists and eugenicists endemic to the Democrat party.
As far as Ms Noonan’s call for more statues — fine — although we are aware of no dearth of liberal icons in many a public setting. Maybe juxtapose a statue of General Grant opposite Lee. But wait, he too was a slave owner for a time. Greatness does not mean faultless.
