Kurds are definable as an ethnic cultural group with an historic territory referred to as Kurdistan an “unofficial”designation however that overlaps several established states (however artificially those states were established after WWI ). It is a strategic and resource valuable area that none of the states that are overlapped want to cede control over. Immensely complicating the situation is that Kurds are tribal and “political as in some “conservative” (~~traditional) and communist (the latter especially associated with terrorism).

It is a complicated situation to say the least. Read the Wiki entries about some of the history and players here here here here here and report back if you see a clear path to establishing a Kurdistan especially if it does not involve us militarily subjugating Turkey, Syria and Iran (and Iraq for that matter), a path that includes getting the various Kurd representatives to agree on matters and work together for the necessary amount of time.

On Turkey, Syria and the Kurds…a couple of hard facts:
1) There is no “Kurdish Territory. The Kurds occupy Syrian territory on Turkey’s border – we established that safe zone.
2) As much as I love the Kurds, they haven’t been fighting for us. They’ve been fighting with us to support them establishing a Kurdish territory in Syria. Truth is they helped us fight ISIS to sweep the northeastern half of Syria which they wanted to claim for themselves – not blaming them, but the truth is this is a fact…just ask any Kurd.
3) Another hard fact, the YPG troops we’ve been supporting are aligned with the PKK who are the Marxist/Leninist faction of the Kurds (Kurdistan’s Workers Party – sound familiar).
4) The PKK (the people we’ve been tangentially supporting) are a designated terrorist organization.
5) Over the last 30 plus years, the PKK has been using the Syrian territory they occupy as Kurds as a platform to launch terrorist attacks in Turkey which has resulted in thousands of Turkish deaths.
6) Here’s the hard fact to accept. Whether we like it or not, Turkey is a NATO member. We are allied with NATO. Therefore, Turkey is our real ally.
7) Obama armed the YPG back in 2014 to fight regular Assad aligned Syrian forces.
8) We know a lot of those weapons have found their way into ISIS hands who fought against us. In addition, they have found their way into PKK hands to fight Turkish troops – our NATO ally.
Even though we know the duplicity of Erdogan, the fact is – for those of us who have been involved for more than half our life and careers in that part of the world – this is the norm of all muslim cultures – including the Kurds. So… show me a muslim who doesn’t practice duplicity as if they’re making a living doing it, and I’ll show you a unicorn.
The last but most important point I’m gonna make comes from my experience of doing what I’ve been doing for almost 40 years now – making young Soldiers grow old like me. The lads are tired. Their families have had enough. We as a Country, which have been involved in a cultural fight which isn’t ours since I first entered the Army in 1982, are getting “long in the tooth” and growing leery of follies which has cost our Country a valuable immeasurable commodity in human capital at the expense of the Max Boot’s, Richard Haass’, Colin Powell’s, Jim Mattis’, Joe Dunsford’s, Mike Mullin’s, Jimmy Carter’s, Susan Rice’s, Barrack Obama’s, Paul Wolfowitz’s and other geniuses who don’t have or never had skin in the game. Bottom line: I’ve been there, I’m still there and I can’t shake the feeling of always knowing these idiots will keep sending my Brothers and Sister’s in arms off to fight for their own vision of “the global solution and exportation of democracy”. My point is F#$% them!!! I care too much for our kids fighting for people who will the next day, think of them as their enemies!!!
Folks…this isn’t that hard…to me there are only two options. Either a) we pull our Troops out of Syria – as POTUS finally did, or b) we remove the PKK from the international list of terrorist organizations and consequently expel Turkey from NATO.
Yea right…go ahead and try to get our our other NATO allies to agree to expelling Turkey from NATO. Good luck with that.
