Another excellent, must-read piece by Victor Davis Hanson. Read to see where this very wise military historian and classics professor comes down on the Syrian question . . . and then contrast it with the typically weak ruminations of lightweight Peggy Noonan, `a la
“When Saddam used gas against the Kurds it was not immediately known to all the world. It was not common knowledge. Syria is different:It is the first, obvious, undeniable, real time You-Tubed use of chemical weapons.”
Really Peggy!? . . . “not immediately known?” What difference does that make? Key “intelligence” agencies knew and Saddam made public threats at the time. And the term “undeniable,” is not operative at least as regards who all of the perps are. According to the same linked article it is said to be an open secret that various Middle East countries have chemical and biological warfare capabilities. Have any of the countries in the region that want to see Assad deposed passed the capability on to the rebels? Did some of Saddam’s chemical WMD’s end up in their hands as a result of the rout in the prelude to Operation Iraqi Freedom? It is a question as unconfirmed as the meritoriousness of one side over the other in the Syria conflict.
And then this ridiculously naive statement from the same column of interlarded merit when it comes to reasoning about Obama:
Finally, this president showed determination and guts in getting Osama bin Laden.
We wonder if Ms. Noonan did not pull that line from one of her love letters to The One. It is not merely a gratuitous compliment, it is pathetic blarney. It can’t be a serious statement with regard to “giving the devil his due,” or providing insight into Obama’s foreign or military policies and dependability. Read and understand Hanson. Noonan, take with a grain of salt. DLH w/ R Mall
