GOP Mitch McConnell CLAIMS MAJOR VICTORY IN BUDGET BATTLE!
Republicans today found it difficult to contain their joy after achieving a major victory over President Obama and Congressional Democrats with the debt deal passed yesterday.
Although the deal included a sharp curb on the power of congress to approve future increases in the debt ceiling and a somewhat controversial $300 billion earmark to fund a project in Senate Minority Leader McConnell’s state, the Republicans were able to extract a major concession from the President and Democratic Congressional leadership.
It was disclosed Thursday morning by a GOP Senate staffer that Republicans had made clear that their demand for removal of a key provision of the White House version of the bill was non-negotiable. The provision would have given President Obama the authority to order the Washington football team to drop the Redskins nickname out of respect for Native Americans and for the Kansas City Chiefs to be renamed the Kansas City Jefes to honor the Latino culture.
It had been feared by many that for the White House to yield to the Republican demand would seriously splinter the Democratic base since all the GOP offered in return was to drop all demands for any change to Obamacare and any future caps on federal government spending. DLH
