Polling Repudiates Republican Establishment on Immigration

How often have we heard from the Republican elitist establishment that in order to win the Senate in 2014 and the next Presidency that Republicans platforms must soften insistence on border security as offensive to Hispanics and embrace “comprehensive immigration reform” a.k.a. amnesty?  The admonition has been vigorously pushed by the Republican establishment talking about the rising Hispanic population and employing presumptions about the general views of Hispanics as regards illegal immigration.

Looking at the purveyors of the “get with it message” we were more inspired to look at the money trail inspiring them. We primarily see big business interests that want cheap labor, regularized and stabilized with the true costs inevitably spread to tax payers to pay for the  extra dependence of low-income workers and their families on welfare services. Their “comprehensive reforms” are meaningless sops that will predictably end up rewarding unlawful immigrants. And they have nothing to do with winning politically either.

The following article by Gary Bauer of Campaign for Working Families provides an analysis of recent polling that shows that the views of the Republican political elite  are politically dumb, not reflective of grassroots politics.  Their views lose more than gain. A principled platform insisting on border security first and foremost is a winning platform.

Riots and terrorism are dominating the headlines. But the issue of illegal immigration may be about to burst back onto the scene. An official at the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants warns that a second surge of unaccompanied illegal minors — perhaps as many as 30,000 children — is likely to reach the U.S. border sometime in the next four to six weeks.

Meanwhile, there is yet more polling data revealing a growing chasm between the American people and our political and cultural elites. Consider these results from a survey conducted last month by The Polling Company: 75% of likely voters (including 63% of Hispanics) favor enforcement of existing immigration laws — the exact opposite of what Barack Obama is doing.

74% of voters oppose any unilateral amnesty by Obama.

60% believed that “sending these children back to their home countries will convince parents to stop sending their children to the U.S.”

And a new poll by Rasmussen Reports finds that 60% of likely voters believe that securing the border is more important than “legalizing the status of undocumented workers in America.”

And what is Obama doing? He recently met behind closed doors at the White House with representatives of leading tech companies trying to find a way to import more foreign workers into America.

That’s odd because Senate Democrats think they can minimize their losses this year by campaigning on “economic patriotism.” How does importing more foreign workers fit into that theme? That could be a tough sell for Democrats, as The Polling Company found that “90% of likely voters feel that U.S.-born workers and legal immigrants already here should get first preference for jobs.”  Ninety percent!

Senator Jeff Sessions blasted the Obama White House’s recent closed-door meeting, noting that virtually every one of the companies now asking for more foreign workers had also announced layoffs. Sessions said:

“Even while they demand more foreign workers, these companies are laying off current employees in droves. Cisco, which Politico reports met with White House aides to advocate for more foreign workers, just last week announced its intent to lay off 6,000 employees. Last month, Microsoft declared it would lay off 18,000 workers. Overall, mass layoffs in the tech industry are up 68% from the prior year.”
