Maybe we should just take Reince’s statement as an admission that Senator Ted Cruz and Iowa’s Congressman Steve King were right . . .
Republican National Chairman Reince Priebus made a dramatic statement speaking on a conference call hosted by TheTeaParty.net. It was in response to a question about the possibility Obama will pursue amnesty on immigration for millions of illegals through executive action.
We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender.
Sorry, wrong speech. Here is what he said:
“We will do everything we can to make sure it doesn’t happen: Defunding, going to court, injunction. You name it. It’s wrong. It’s illegal. And for so many reasons, and just the basic fabric of this country, we can’t allow it to happen and we won’t let it happen. I don’t know how to be any stronger than that. I’m telling you, everything we can do to stop it we will.”
We welcome an authentic recognition of immigration as a potent driving force this election particularly for those Republicans who embrace border security and are willing to hang the various related issues around their Democrat opponent’s neck. But is Priebus’ statement “authentic” or is it boob bait for us Bubbas?
We believe those Republicans tepid on the issue or intent on doing the Chamber of Commerce bidding will miss the opportunity not only to demonstrate enthusiasm for doing the right thing for America but to greatly undermine blue-collar support for Democrats ( a good thing for them and America). It is an issue of immense importance sitting right in the lap of Republicans. Those willing to speak out forcefully for border security will win solidly, those who barely mention it (Joni Ernst for example) may limp to victory with Republicans and enough other people more dissatisfied with Obamacrats than confident in her.
And what confidence should Republicans have in a statement by Republican leadership now on the matter when so many hung the Steve King’s out to dry for speaking the truth about illegal immigration? They are the same people who play footsie if not embrace amnesty. As regards such threats as “going to court” we note this commentary appearing today in Patriot Post . Democrat operatives must be quaking in their boots.
GOP Hasn’t Actually Sued the President
Remember when Republicans promised to sue the president over his unconstitutional delay of the ObamaCare employer mandate? Good times. Seems they’ve forgotten about it themselves. Politico reports, “House Speaker John Boehner came out swinging hard last June when he announced that his chamber would take President Barack Obama to court. The suit, charging that the president grossly exceeded his constitutional authority by failing to implement portions of the Obamacare law, was billed as an election-season rallying point for aggrieved Republicans. But days before the midterms, the House’s legal guns seem to have fallen silent. Lawyers close to the process said they originally expected the legal challenge to be filed in September, but now they don’t expect any action before the elections.” By the time Republicans get around to filing — if they get around to it — the employer mandate will be in effect and the entire issue a moot point. Republicans are possibly riding a wave to an election win, signaling that their incompetence is outdone only by that of Democrats. More . . .
And regarding the “defunding” threats a contextual reading must admit that Priebus’s statement is referring to the interim between the election and when a new Congress is seated. That current Congress definitively does not include a Republican Senate. So any actions are left to the House. It also is so definitive to include intentions, win-lose or draw, regarding the election just one week away. Refer to the commentary above regarding excuses and the number of Republican establishment types (including Mitch McConnell) who “did a number” on the Ted Cruz’s and Mike Lee’s who called for the use of the power of the purse to thwart Obama.
It is incredible politics. The attempt to exercise Constitutional responsibility and focus attention on the Obamanation on matters like Obamacare, spending, and especially immigration was treated as deadly to Republican political prospects. Now Priebus promises in a way that “can’t be any stronger” to pursue those very tactics chided, condemned walked away from by much of the “leadership” of the party .
By the way here are a few more things for Chairman Priebus to get incensed about. R Mall
