Exclusive: House GOP Leaders Trick 216 House Republicans into Accidentally Supporting Obama’s Executive Amnesty
It details manipulations by Republican leadership that occurred with H.R. 5759, the Ted Yoho sponsored bill intended to block Obama’s executive amnesty. The bill passed the House but not in the form it was originally submitted by Yoho. Republican Leadership significantly altered it. Among those crying foul are Louis Gohmert (R-TX) who we trust. A number of conservative groups are lining up to start a campaign to oust Boehner.
Now the bill was destined to die in Harry Reid’s Senate, and no doubt for a variety of pro-amnesty / protect Obama reasons. But it is argued that the alterations made by top Republican leadership may have given Obama cover to proceed with his executive amnesty as a humanitarian measure, rhetorically if not legally. There were some last-minute changes that may have been helpful but they are not at issue.
The “humanitarian language” changes, it is argued, were necessary to conform to existing law and constitutional powers of the President. It is argued that the language would not have provided legal authority for the particulars or scope of Obama’s executive overreach.
We can accept that interpretation and still object to the necessity of including it (severability clauses and even references to existing law would be superior avenues to avoid conflict), not to mention the methodology and heavy-handedness used as detailed in the story. And then there is the reality that there are justifications not to trust Boehner given the pledges and assurances broken.
