Finally, Romney didn’t stutter, but to what avail?
That was no “King’s Speech” Thursday. Instead Mitt Romney has come off, as Donald Trump might say, as a “pathetic, bitter loser”.
What Mitt managed to do in about 17 minutes was to utterly destroy his reputation as a decent, responsible public servant and establish for all time, the image of a whiney political hack, attempting to sell a new plan to ensure the total destruction of the Republican Party…a probably unintentional effort he substantially advanced 4 years ago in one of the most inept presidential campaigns in history.
Get this, from a CNN analysis Friday:
Washington (CNN) “Mitt Romney has instructed his closest advisers to explore the possibility of stopping Donald Trump at the Republican National Convention, a source close to Romney’s inner circle says.
“The 2012 GOP nominee’s advisers are examining what a fight at the convention might look like and what rules might need revising.
“It sounds like the plan is to lock the convention,” said the source.
Romney is focused on suppressing Trump’s delegate count to prevent him from accumulating the 1,237 delegates he needs to secure the nomination.
“But implicit in Romney’s request to his team to explore the possibility of a convention fight is his willingness to step in and carry the party’s banner into the fall general election as the Republican nominee. Another name these sources mentioned was House Speaker Paul Ryan, Romney’s running mate in 2012.”
One observation we would have is that, while Donald Trump is not the answer to what ails this great nation, another Romney candidacy would be worse. And only one thing we can think of offhand that would be worse than that, is a Paul Ryan run!
Whatever confidence GOP voters may have had in Paul Ryan was completely erased when, as the widely acclaimed new Speaker of the House, the nation witnessed his immediate and abject capitulation to Obama’s entire final year agenda.
But let’s recall that before that, as Romney’s running mate in 2012, Ryan was initially touted as a superb pick. An expert authority on the economy, a fearless defender of conservative principles, and a wildly articulate campaigner. Then he debated his Democrat V.P. opponent, the clownish Joe Biden. Many objective political analysts agreed that Biden mopped the floor with him! More startling than that, the widely “derided” Sara Palin was churlishly acknowledged to have won her debate with Biden 4 years earlier.
In light of the incredible goings on this week, I suggest that some of us dumb old angry conservatives must be wondering if we’re witnessing the willful destruction of the Republican Party by its own “elites”.
