Trump administration must show that Clintons not above the law

Trump won’t pursue charges against Clinton

The NY Post article above refers to statements by key Trump spokesperson Kellyanne Conway.  The on-line post sort of implies by some surrounding context that the reference is to the Hillary Clinton e-mail scandal. Other articles have implied the no prosecution sentiment is plenary as regards Hillary.

President-elect Donald Trump won’t subject Hillary Clinton to a criminal inquiry — instead, he’ll help her heal, his spokeswoman said Tuesday.
“I think when the president-elect who’s also the head of your party … tells you before he’s even inaugurated he doesn’t wish to pursue these charges, it sends a very strong message, tone and content, to the members,” Kellyanne Conway told the hosts of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” who first reported that the president-elect would not pursue his campaign pledge to “lock up” Clinton, his Democratic opponent.

“Look, I think, he’s thinking of many different things as he prepares to become the president of the United States, and things that sound like the campaign are not among them,” Conway, who is now on the Trump transition team, said in her interview.

She continued: “I think Hillary Clinton still has to face the fact that a majority of Americans don’t find her to be honest or trustworthy, but if Donald Trump can help her heal, then perhaps that’s a good thing.”

At the second presidential debate in October, Trump sounded a much harsher tone.
“If I win, I am going to instruct my attorney general to get a special prosecutor to look into your situation because there has never been so many lies, so much deception,” he vowed.

We understand that, generally speaking, anything emanating from much of the press about what Trump or his people have said needs full contextual video-taped confirmation and a forensic analysis to see how it was altered. While still prudent to guard against,  the NY Post would not be considered knee-jerk hostile to Trump, however sensational they can be in their journalism.

Another caution comes out of some sense of respect for the limits of language  (but with reduced excusability when the person has time to prepare and should know to be precise). In the world of Trump, when he makes a statement, it bears repeating only when he emphasizes it a lot.   That is not a slam, it is a nod to his rejection of politically correct language and style. Now that he is President-elect, that excuse has much reduced salience.

Then again, there is much to the idea of “floating things,” feeling your way along, during transitions of power and trying to anticipate how much cooperation is needed. At this writing I am not sure that is not the case.  With all that in mind Trump’s policy, announced through a much depended upon spokesperson, is a disappointment, and we hope for revised and extended remarks that will truly support the rule of law and equal treatment under the law. Those concepts are impinged by the words and implications of the statement delivered by Ms Conway, not to mention that they deflate any reliance on truth in campaigning.

Consider again her statement:   “I think Hillary Clinton still has to face the fact that a majority of Americans don’t find her to be honest or trustworthy, but if Donald Trump can help her heal, then perhaps that’s a good thing.”

So that is the extent of what the powerful face for things others go to jail for, —  embarrassment?  What dime store embezzler or wannabe tyrant would not take such a deal as the downside?  “I’ll take the healing process outside of jail please.”

Think again of what has been clearly revealed about her selfish reasons, her subversion of law, her hazarding of national security, her lies, just about the e-mail scandal. It is entirely true and necessarily that others have been sent to jail for less.  It is also inescapable that Trump pumped up crowds repeatedly with “lock-her-up” chants and dialogue.   Where did we hear references to  “crooked Hillary” again?!   Oh, the campaign is over, get over it, we’ll tell you what we really meant, fool.  The money quotes from the October 9th debate are at 1:12 and 3:00 in the video below.   The link below the imbed is to an AP article which has a video of similar statements from Trump on the stump  (my post continues below the embed).

AP report from the campaign trail — Trump says Clinton ‘has to go to jail’  (see at 1:30)

We are practical enough to keep our eye on the most important aspects of saving the country from eight more years of the Obamanation. Hillary’s prosecution is not essential to that.  Trump’s election has given us a new lease on life as a republic. But it is foolish to think that prosecuting Hillary for illegal activities is a diversion or will lessen vituperation from the media and Democrat operatives. They will not cooperate on anything because of forbearance by Trump on the Clinton’s.  Better to let them know there are repercussions under the law for law breaking on the left. Disgust with politicians helps neither Republicans or Democrats in these times.

We can accept that FBI Director Comey may have so muddied the water and that the Obama Justice department has so corrupted the pursuit of criminal justice in the e-mail matter that aspects may be foreclosed.  However, from a poker stand point, we see no purpose in announcing there will be no prosecution other than to tell us rubes to back off because Trump really didn’t mean some of those things he said . . .that that part was all theater . . . and don’t we know that?

But there are also suggestions that the Trump administration will take a pass on even considering illegalities as regards the Clinton Foundation after all “they are good people” (tell it to the Haitians).  These are repeated not just by liberal outlets.

Conway confirms: Trump not interested in pursuing Hillary

It is all the sort of thing that feeds speculation, some in defense of Trump, some out of cynicism. On the good side there is the thought that this is all rope-a-dope, liberals, not us. Suggesting there will be no prosecution may give Obama pause from preemptively pardoning Hillary from prosecution if that is possible (we are not convinced it is).  A pardon would embarrass Hillary and even impact political hopes for her daughter, so if a pardon can be avoided that is best although if Hillary was sure Trump would give his AG his or her head on the matter, she would take the pardon in a heartbeat and worry about the other aspects down the road.

OR some have surmised that Trump does not want to be vulnerable to paybacks  (the little guy has no such cards to play) because he is or anticipates being vulnerable when he leaves the presidency and wants to send a message of, shall we say,  professional courtesy.  But we repeat, liberals will be out to get him no matter what. He is incredibly naive if he thinks they will honor any gentlemen’s agreement. At the very least they will pursue death by a thousand cuts.
