Final tally — Republican wins by 8 points in Kansas special election
In the past week, the great interest by the media was not Syria or Russia, or ISIS. No, it seemed the big story was the special election in Kansas for a successor to the congressional seat formerly held by Mike Pompeo, a Republican named by President Trump to head the CIA.
Apparently it was such a big story because the media had some basis to hope that the Democratic candidate would pull off an upset in a district where Trump had won by 27%. A win by civil rights attorney James Thompson would thus show the world that even in red state Kansas voters hated Donald Trump. By Monday, the media’s optimism had become a frenzy.
But then Tuesday was election day…and…”GLOOM, DESPAIR AND AGONY ON ME!”*
The Republican candidate , Ron Estes, won.
The cries of despair and anguish in liberal media newsrooms across each of the coasts could be heard. Much gnashing of teeth ensued.
But wait! The liberal media was not going to give in that easily. Across the country newspapers this morning, including the dreadful excuse for one, the Kansas City Star, was reporting that while, sure the GOP candidate won but that was expected.
IT WAS, IN THE MEDIA’S NEAR UNANIMOUS JUDGEMENT, A REAL “SQUEAKER”…AND THUS, STILL A SEVERE
BLOW TO PRESIDENT TRUMP.
The KC Star’s lead story, front page above the fold, reported that “…Estes prevailed with 53% to Thompson’s 47%…”
It was such close vote, the Star suggested, that “…it would likely have reverberations both nationally and in Kansas as the state moves into 2018 with the governor’s office “up for grabs”.
SINCE WHEN IS A 53% TO 45% ( the final result) AN 8 POINT WINNING MARGIN NOT A DECISIVE VICTORY IN AN OPEN SEAT?
In 2008 Obama beat weirdo John McCain by 53% to 46% and the hapless Mitt Romney in 2012, 51.1% to 47.2%
Never heard either of those results considered “squeakers’ or ominous for the Dems in 2016. Oh, but then…..
This was also a special election. The Democrat game plan revolves around collecting absentee votes from people who have no interest in voting, could not tell you the name of the candidates in many cases without prompting. The percentage victory, given that absentee voting is made to order for Democrat tactics including perhaps encouraging non-citizens to register? Judge rules Kansas cannot require citizenship proof to vote.
At any rate, it would seem fair to say that since November 2016, the traditional Democratic Party rallying song “Happy Days Are Here Again” has been replaced by Buck Owens and Roy Clark’s classic:
*Gloom, despair, and agony on me
Deep, dark depression, excessive misery
If it weren’t for bad luck, I’d have no luck at all
Gloom, despair, and agony on me
We figured she was rich, loaded to the hilt
And we figured she had class like the Vanderbilts
‘Cause we had heard for years how she was so well reared
How was we to know they meant the way she was built
Gloom, despair, and agony on me
Deep, dark depression, excessive misery
If it weren’t for bad luck, I’d have no luck at all
Gloom, despair, and agony on me
*From the TV Show “Hee-Haw” (1969 -1992)
