Cheer for the “Capitulatin’ Irish”

An opinion piece in today’s Wall Street Journal by Alexandra DeSanctis  (pay wall) laments last month’s decision by Notre Dame’s president, Rev. John Jenkins that it will honor part of the contentious Obamacare mandate and cover the cost of “simple contraceptives” through its insurance program.

(The announcement noted, however, that it will discontinue coverage of abortifacients.)

The author of the piece correctly notes, in making this exception, that the university had sued for relief from  the Obama administration mandate on its standing as a “religious institution”, and to require it to provide artificial birth control insurance coverage to its members violated its religious freedom.

With this decision, however, Notre Dame seems to be saying it is a religious institution, and it IS willing to stand firm on ‘some’ of its fundamental beliefs (ABORTIFACIENTS), but not so on others if expedient to do so.

To us, the real ‘scandal’ in Rev. Jenkins announcement is his skin-crawling rationale, alarmingly familiar to virtually  every Catholic Democratic politician’s sanctimony on the subject of abortion. It began with the late N Y Governor Mario Cuomo when he said that, while “personally opposed to abortion”, as a politician one would not be compelled to “impose his (religious) views on others” (see Breitbart article ).Here is Reverend Jenkins’ version of the ‘Cuomo faith doctrine’:

In justifying the birth control decision , Jenkins said that Catholic tradition requires respect for the “conscientious decisions of members of our community…”. Seems to us a play on the Cuomo ‘principle’: ‘The university’s religious views should not be imposed on its students’.

So, what happens when a rowdy band of activist students calls for the Rev. Jenkins to stop imposing the church’s views on abortion on them?

Democratic politicians like the “devout Catholic”, Nancy Pelosi and ‘lovable’ Joe Biden , have been living off the Cuomo theory for decades.

Et tu Reverend Jenkins?    DLH

(Note: It also seems to us that the Rev. President Jenkins has always had a soft spot in his heart for “most things Obama”. In 2009 Rev. Jenkins happily welcomed then President Obama to the South Bend campus to present him with an honorary degree of laws.

And, here is how the honorary doctor of laws degree read:

“A community organizer who honed his advocacy for the poor, the marginalized and the worker in the streets of Chicago, he now organizes a larger community, bringing to the world a renewed American dedication to diplomacy and dialogue with all nations and religions committed to human rights and the global common good.

“Through his willingness to engage with those who disagree with him and encourage people of faith to bring their beliefs to the public debate, he is inspiring this nation to heal its divisions of religion, culture, race and politics in the audacious hope for a brighter tomorrow.”

Cheer, cheer for old Notre Dame,
Wake up the echoes cheering her name,
Send a volley cheer on high,
Shake down the thunder from the sky.
What though the odds be great or small
Old Notre Dame will win over all……...

Its lofty moral standards aside, why can’t the students and faculty of this “prestigious” and pricey institution buy their own damn condoms?
