That is the logical conclusion of the criticism of long standing immigration and other law enforcement policy “to tear children from their mothers” who are flight risks. Of course many of the same critics are OK with tearing children from their mothers wombs in pieces during abortion.
If trauma on the children due to separation is the overwelming concern (and not propaganda ) then the critics logically should be advocating for housing children in prisons, or setting all “parents” free. Here are some related articles from the Daily Caller:

The “horror” is that it is a Democrat sustained /liberal judge created policy. Democrats can help fix the particular problem but they are not serious about anything other than open borders.
There are no more excuses for any misunderstandings about the concept of national borders and legal and orderly admittance. Every sentient adult and child of age understands the concept.
The family unity solution is to turn the family units away as a unit until they prove a need for asylum or the legitimacy of other lawful entrance. Temporary detention as a unit pending an asylum hearing (the only category legitimately a concern in this latest “Trumped up” controversy) has to be authorized by law. Trump is obeying the not unreasonable law (even if he does not like it) that adults and children not be housed together during a determination of wrongdoing on the part of the parent(s) who are necessarily detained as being of a categorical high risk of flight and evasion into the US. There should be detention and a speedy determination of asylum status.
