Bralards & Loebama To Me

Perhaps it is timely, considering events of the past week, to recall the actions and antics of this area’s two Democrat congressmen, in some of their “finest moments.”
Take Bruce Braley . . . to paraphrase  the late comedian, Henny Youngman . . . PLEASE!

It’s a puzzlement.

Many of us may not recall, but it was the (then) QC’s freshman congressman who in 2008 stepped to the national political stage and breathlessly announced that he was endorsing John Edwards for President of the United States. For sheer laughs, read Braleys’ Waterloo moment with Edwards below. Or consider this liberal blog’s take on the matter.

For even bigger laughs, watch the YouTube video of Congressman Braley’s moving tribute to himself and Mr. Edwards . . .  two peas from the same pod as Bruce so eloquently suggests.

Finally, if you just can’t get enough of the small town lawyer turned American Statesman, read the New York Times column from Gail Collins who brings her rapier prose effectively to bear against Edwards, revealing, at last, that they knew Edwards was a fraud all along while  some of those “great minds in the Democratic Party” (such as Waterloo’s  own “Bruce Almighty”), were happily suckered.

There was a time when many of the great minds in the Democratic Party thought John Edwards would be the perfect presidential nominee. He was cute and from the South, and the son of a millworker, and he talked about poor people and had lots of position papers. . . .

Unfortunately, he was about as deep as a melted ice cube. . .
For somebody with “big, bold positions,” Edwards really had very little to say that wasn’t slick and evasive. . . .

Anyhow, some major presidential candidates are more enthralling when they talk about what they believe than others, but they can generally at least show you how they came to be at the table. John Edwards, not so much. Yet it was hard to put your finger on what was lacking, . . . He had an excellent stump speech and was really good at not saying anything that sounded stupid in a quotable way. . . .

But, somehow, the public realized that this guy who looked so good and sounded so glib was really a fraud. Even without knowing about the secret love child or the sleazy right-hand man, or the impressive ability to stare right into a TV camera and lie like a rug, they got his number and picked other people to run for president. Voters’ gut instincts are generally pretty good. They certainly were with John Edwards. . . .”

No doubt, though, the “great minds of the Democratic Party” learn from their mistakes . . .  or do they? Can you say “Elizabeth Warren”?

But, enough about Congressman Braley.

Quad Citians need to recall that Dave Loebsack, liberal educator (is there another kind?        . . . yes, but keep it a secret)  turned Congressman and new  “great mind of the Democratic Party,”   unlike his colleague Braley, picked the winner in ’08, endorsing, yep, Barack Obama.

U.S. Rep. Dave Loebsack said today he is endorsing Barack Obama for president. He said that Obama, a senator from Illinois, offers the best chance to bring about change and healing.

“I believe he’s our best candidate to change the way business is done, especially overcoming the partisan divide,” Loebsack said in an interview this morning.

The puzzlement is…as foolish as Bruce Braley was, didn’t Dave Loebsack and his fellow “great minds” help cause unprecedented destruction to our nation by their support of, arguably, the worst president in our nation’s history…destruction far worse than John Edwards could likely have done.

Jus’ wonderin’.  DLH
