Mr. Metevier Goes to Washington.

This is a big day for the QC’s premier broadcast journalists.

Ok, I’m kidding. I am referring, however, in sarcastic terms to KWQC-TV ‘s Monday spectacular,”Mr. Metevier Goes to Washington”.

Yep, Channel 5’s (706 in HD) Gary Metevier will have an “exclusive” interview with President Obama today, at which our eloquent president will be sorely tested by the keen political insight and incisive questioning of the QC’s premier anchorman. Brace yourself, Mr. President.

Sunday night, Gary and one of KWQC’s “suits”, presumably Gary’s boss discussed their upcoming “big day.” Actually “discuss” bestows a somewhat undeserved dignity on this exchange. Like two schoolboys, Gary and the other guy (I didn’t catch his name and didn’t care to make the effort) were giddy about this chance to act like big journalists. The White House, can you believe it, invited us to Washington. We’ll get a tour of the White House, meet lots of the President’s close advisors, “rub elbows”, as it were, with all kinds of staffers and other big time news people, and, most mportantly, sit down with Mr. Obama and apprise him of the mood of the Heartland.

They gushed about how their being invited was a measure of the importance of this state to the 2012 election, hinting strongly that that extended to KWQC’s importance as well.

To give an idea of where this “news adventure” is likely to go, the “suit” felt compelled to demonstrate his keen political insight by offering his critique of the “Citizens United” SCOTUS decision…essentially echoing the “concerns” and criticisms voiced by their “host” for the day Monday, Mr. Obama. In this writer’s opinion, really “minor league” performance.

Now, don’t get me wrong. Gary Metevier, by his behavior, on and off camera, and by all accounts, is a good guy. He’s also a competent local news anchor. He seems to work hard and have good and admirable instincts.

KWQC is, however, an NBC affiliate…and I think we’ll see all that means in this “media event”.   DLH
