Mayor Bill Gluba Is Not Leveling With People About Immigration Costs

VM contributed to this report.

Indeed the terms  “evasive, casuistry, weasel words, equivocating, hiding the truth, and side tracking” come to mind as well.  Gluba is championing a  “Caring City” initiative to arrange for 200 Central American citizens (the mix of teens parents and children unknown) to come to Davenport where they will be housed, fed, schooled and provided medical care.  No time limit has been set nor is any possible due to the current state of U.S. immigration law and the court system.  Responding to one of the objections citizens have raised, the use of  tax based resources,   Mayor Gluba is reported by KWQC News to have issued the following statement:

“I want to make clear this effort is a private initiative of the local social services community and myself – not the City of Davenport. No city money is being expended!”

Gluba evasively narrowed the scope of his response when in the truth citizen objections  are comprehensive as regards the variety of tax burdens they face if his actions succeed.  The assertion that no city money is being used is not responsive to the concerns about burdening  the capacity of local tax supported welfare delivery mechanisms funded with    county, school district, state and federal dollars. So while cities in Iowa are not tasked with the administrating and budgeting for social welfare delivery that does not mean that those costs are not borne locally by tax payers through tax supported governmental operations  directly providing services or through outlays to fulfillment social service agencies that may also receive charitable contributions.

The idea put forth by Mayor Gluba that the federal government will pay all costs as if Davenport citizens do not pay federal taxes or that this is a bring home the federal pork project is beneath contempt as a responsible statement from an elected official. It is even doubtful that the “system” would actually work that way as reimbursements and block grants are  notoriously fixed cumbersome lagging and insufficient.

This is a Quad City issue

Besides the potential for outbreaks  of diseases  not seen here in decades  brought with them, as the Central Americans will likely be given only cursory health screenings prior to transportation, it is wrong to subject them to the possibility of  diseases here for which they have no immunities. Such problems know no boundaries.

Gluba is busy trying to cajole cities near and far into  his Caring Cities boondoggle and rush the border encouragement program. Contact your local mayors office and urge them to reject such non-solutions that further burden our nations sovereignty and capacity for caring for citizens, Please further urge them to contact state and federal officials to raise concerns about the ongoing crisis on the border.  We encourage a demand to Congress that they immediately pass legislation appropriately amending if not rescinding any law or executive order used and abused during this created border crisis.
