GOP “warriors” ceding the battle

  • Trade authority
  • Treaty power
  • Joni Ernst from “impeach Obama” to give him more power ???

Giving “fast-track trade authority” to president diminishes Congress             Dick Morris at WND asks: GOP: Lost its soul or just its mind?     Excerpts:

Fast-Track-NRD-obamaImagine if Republicans could force Obama to rescind his executive amnesty for illegal immigrants. Or repeal the mandate to buy health insurance that lies at the core of Obamacare. Or revoke the EPA regulations that are increasingly embracing all aspects of American life in the name of stopping climate change  . .All this would be possible if the Republicans dug in their heels and refused to grant Obama fast track authority to get ratification of trade deals. . . .

Instead, Republicans are falling all over themselves to give Obama more power and to curtail congressional checks and balances. Even as Obama seizes power by unprecedented use of executive authority, Republicans in both houses are trying to give him more.   . . .

If anyone ever doubted the power big business holds over the Republican Party, the events unfolding on the trade deal should dispel them. . . .

Obama’s strategy is clear enough: Bypass Congress and act through the treaty-making power to implement his program. With fast track, he need not worry about the filibuster or a super majority or pesky congressional amendments. They will all be banned.

Corker- Menendez cedes power to Obama, increases risk of nuclear Iran.  An amendment to this bill to declare that any agreement reached by the President relating to the nuclear program of Iran is deemed a treaty was opposed by Senator Ernst.  To their credit the amendment was supported by Senator Grassley and 38 other Republicans.     Michael T Hamilton at The Federalist writes:

How The Iran Bill Weakens Senate Oversight While Trying To Preserve It  Excerpts:

If the Corker-Menendez bill passes as is, the president could execute the same weak Iran agreement that he was going to enter unilaterally—while now claiming legitimacy. . . .

But Corker-Menendez does not bring treaties closer to oversight—only closer to Congress. The former implies a reasonable chance for Congress to exercise its authority. The latter implies only that Congress was given a chance to voice the empty protest of its powerless majority. Unamended, the bill provides no more oversight than parents who say, “We know we can’t stop you from going God knows where to get high, so ask to use our basement, and if we say no, use it anyway. Thanks.”

There’s only one thing worse than fighting a war with a president who ducks the Constitution and Congress at every turn: giving him cover while he does it.

This is why Corker’s insistence that “this bill is about the process,” not about “the content of any deal,” loses steam. Many Republicans regard the proposed legislation as better than nothing because it forces the president to include Congress. Except it really does not. The process to be instituted risks turning Congress into a rubber stamp for future deals the executive brokers even when 60-plus percent of both chambers object.

Joni Ernst goes from “impeach Obama,”  to giving him more power

th-7Senator Ernst’s campaign rhetoric about the threat of Obama’s executive actions to the Constitution and the separation of powers, possibly implicating impeachment  (here and here) is not matched by her support of “fast track” trade authority, which effectively gives up Congressional oversight.  Nor does it comport with her support of  Corker-Menendez which will allow a major foreign policy agreement with Iran to proceed as if it is not a treaty.  Both bill concepts are constitutionally  flawed, the specifics worse and the implications under the likes of Obama dangerous. The bills should be opposed.

Senator Grassley opposes the treaty power give away as regards Iran, Ernst not hardly by her vote. Both senators have spoken favorably of “fast track”trade provisions. Both she and Senator Grassley need to back off from ceding more power to the presidency in any guise including “fast track”.  Recently they have indicated concern about the implications it has as regards immigration matters being incorporated into trade deals. Doing the bidding of the Constitution instead of the Chamber of Commerce, is what the country needs. We encourage contacting their offices.  Contact information is available on our page bar at top.
