WILL PAUL RYAN ‘TAKE A KNEE’ ON SPENDING FOR THE WALL?

HEY, PAUL…IT’S NOT YOUR CALL!

If there’s a government shutdown because Democrats  would obstinately block a legitimate action by the majority party because they don’t like it, it’s their decision…and their problem!

In this case, because the GOP is in the majority in both houses of Congress, a “shut down” (we know how dramatic a non-event that is) is inevitable only if the GOP House and Senate, don’t send a bill including spending for the wall to Trump and force him to veto (as he seems to be threatening to do). Not funding the wall is to go against the GOP national and state platforms not to mention how important the promise was to obtaining a Republican presidency.

Speaker Paul, why would you want to take responsibility for such incredible bad faith particularly after saying just a few weeks ago that you support the wall?

And Mr. Speaker, how does that work  . . . when Obama, vetoed or threatened any government shutdown or near shutdown it was, of course, on the GOP.  Either way you seem to concede blame, fail to attack Democrats and give them a free ride in spite of their recalcitrance.

Oh, wait. I think I know.  Only the people are serious.

From the Daily Mail:

Paul Ryan says government shutdown is not ‘in our interest’ as Republicans see Trump’s threat over border wall funding as ‘unhelpful

President Trump said Tuesday that his border wall would be funded even if he had to shut down the government to force Congress’s hand

DailyMail.com asked a dozen conservative House members and six conservative senators if they agreed with him

No spokespersons would talk on the record about the idea; only two would speak on background

Now House Speaker Paul Ryan says Republicans don’t have to choose between pursuing border security and running the rest of the government

‘I don’t think a government shutdown is necessary, and I don’t think most people want to see a government shutdown, ourselves included,’ Ryan said

House Speaker Paul Ryan on Wednesday dismissed the idea that funding President Donald Trump’s promised border wall will inevitably lead to a government shutdown as a September 30 deadline looms for a new federal budget.

‘I don’t think a government shutdown is necessary, and I don’t think most people want to see a government shutdown, ourselves included,’ Ryan told reporters following remarks at the Intel Corporation’s Oregon headquarters.

‘I don’t think anyone’s interested in having a shutdown. I don’t think it’s in our interest to do so,’ he said.

The House included $1.6 billion for Trump’s wall construction in a July spending bill, but it’s unclear whether Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell will push for a similar measure in his chamber.

The White House’s relationship with McConnell has become unusually strained in recent weeks, judging from published reports of furious, expletive-laden conversations between the president and the Senate’s top dog.

So only (nominal) Republicans can block spending on the “wall”.

And is Ryan now telegraphing that he will not support the spending three weeks after he said he supported it?

Now that Trump has upped the ante, if Ryan was sincere shouldn’t he be saying “damn straight Mr. President and I’ll help you put the onus on the Democrats and certain of the GOP in the Senate?”

What this boils down to is the courage of Ryan to get the spending through the House and sustain the President,  and McConnell the courage to eliminate the arguably unconstitutional filibuster,  which the Democrats would not hesitate to do in a New York minute for their own purposes.

I would prefer not a wall but for physical aesthetic reasons. Regrettably we are faced with a mindset among many of open borders and non enforcement of immigration laws. The fence/wall sends another message and is a tool for enforcement as Ryan admits. Immigration reform must include serious onus on employers of any sort and on the sanctuary city concept with its greater offloading of costs to the federal and state treasury as they complain that cooperation with ICE is somehow burdensome. Immigration reform must include adequate legal immigration provisions but with compliance a serious matter.

Beginning to build the wall is a psychological thing. I’d bet that some areas are either unsuitable or impractical for a wall. If there is not at least a significant section built, it will be a moral victory for the dems. As anyone who’s ever had ants can tell you, removing the attraction is key. We are doing that now. Every journey begins with a single step.
