The 3rd Amendment helps explain the 2nd (and our founding zeitgeist)

  • None of the Bill of Rights are irrelevant today
  • The Third Amendment stands against the concept of socialism

Forwarded by RD this video is a helpful explanation of the continued relevance of the Third Amendment to the US Constitution focusing on the context it offers to the Second. But we would suggest that it also set a tone against all manner of government intrusion and confiscatory practices. That idea follows the video exposition here. The video is five and a half minutes but the main point is complete by about three and a half.

The quartering of troops concept is not limited to physical presence in your home (room) but also the troops’ sustenance as food stuffs and whatever else might be confiscated (board). So is a substantial takeover of your wealth by troops of politicians or bureaucrats any less onerous?  The Founding Fathers of course realized taxation was necessary indeed to support an army and navy in order to protect the homeland, and for other purposes, but socialism represents the takeover of your home and sustenance to be parceled out perhaps at the benevolence of the “troops”.  The very idea is contra our founding.

The YouTube* site where the originator posted the video has a comment section.  We found these important points

The second amendment about National Defense? More like personal defense against an oppressive lawless government.   Posted by “trangia94534”

The crash test dummy forgot to mention that ALL of the rights elaborated in the Bill of Rights are individual rights, belonging to each and every one of us. I mention this because anti-gun folks mistakenly state that the second amendment is a “group” right and “militia” refers to the National Guard rather than the people as a whole.    Posted by “Ray White”

* as alternatives become established we hope to be in a position to not refer people to YouTube
