The cultural mentions in the article are quite good although in the last few years we have noticed that some retail outlets and even restaurants have closed on Easter Sunday that we remember being open in previous years.

• School choice will improve public schools
• A winning issue for Republicans — widespread support for school choice especially among disadvantaged minorities

The title of our post today makes as much sense as the refrain from the usual suspects regarding school choice funding to wit (twit): “public dollars should (only) be used to support our public schools.”  We responded to the parroting of that line by State Representative Mary Masher (D- Iowa City) writing to The Iowa Standard Saturday.  Read her views at the link.  Our view follows:

REP. MASCHER: Republican disagreement on Education Savings Accounts for families has led to legislative stalemate. 

Democrat Mascher says “I firmly believe public dollars should be used to support our public schools.” Well under proposals before the legislature they will be. Perhaps she meant only used to support public schools. But either way her position conceptually has real consistency problems unless she is advocating that in the area of education Pell Grants, and Iowa Tuition Grants, school busing, should not benefit private school students. It also does not square well with even allowing tax deductions or exemptions for private school fees or institutions.

Consistency would require her to oppose the use of any tax support, treasury payment, exemption or benefit when a state created entity exists, even when private entities pre-existed the state entity as was the case with education and which is also the case with health care delivery and social services. Her position (may I use that pronoun) would seem logically to implicate that the state ought not buy any service from any private entity and should only transfer payments when the entity is a tax dependent entity.

The core goal of the state should be to facilitate basic education (indeed be limited to it) not the perpetuation of government run schools with all their inefficiencies, insufficiencies excessive cost and may I add cultural corruptions. It should be presumed the person being supported is the student (under the guidance of the tax-paying parent) not government employees.

As to the thought that special education students would be abandoned or short-changed, no-body is saying that government schools cannot exist but it should be acknowledged that private entities were the first to step in to education special needs children, including the blind and disabled. The extra costs are often real and a student diagnosed with such needs can have the extra costs added to any formula for reimbursement. Again the goal ought to be education not state bureaucracies. The tax dollars, adjusted for need should follow the student under the prime tutelage of the parent.

Regrettably there are Republicans parroting the “public dollars should be used to support our public schools” line and they should be called to task in primaries.

In Menlo, Iowa the other day Biden got a bit off script

White House leaky diaper patrol says Biden’s accusation about Putin being guilty of genocide (stated here in Iowa by the way) was just sort of a personal feeling or something. It was supposedly off script. Of course “Resident Joe” doesn’t have actual strong feelings against real genocide (nor any actual understanding of the concept).  Consider his “personal feelings” about Xi and China:  From the New York Post: President Biden is dismissing the genocide against the Uighur population in China, dubbing the mass internment a “different norm” — despite the State Department this month responding to “atrocities” in the camps, following reports of systemic rape and torture.

This commentary by Gary Bauer at American Values expresses some sentiments we share about the Ukraine situation.  Bold our emphasis.

Biden: Leading The Free World?

Joe Biden is using every horrible day of the carnage being inflicted on Ukraine by Vladimir Putin as a political opportunity for himself and the left. 

The globalists that dominate the U.S. government and left-wing political strategists see the Ukraine war as an opportunity to distract the American people from the damage they’re doing to our country. 

In addition, the conflict gives Biden an opportunity to be seen as “Commander-in-Chief” and “Leader of the Free World.” He is neither. Nonetheless, Biden and his strategists believe patriotic Americans will eventually rally around him, particularly if the conflict drags on. 

It’s revealing that no one in key positions in Washington is calling for serious negotiations to find a compromise to end the war. It’s revealing that the always vocal, left-wing anti-war movement isn’t staging mass protests against Joe Biden right now.

Meanwhile, Biden’s own rhetoric makes it less likely that peace talks and negotiations that could end the death and destruction will take place. 

His rhetoric makes it more likely that Vladimir Putin will fight to win or die trying. Only a fool would assume that if Putin is cornered, he won’t use the ultimate weapons at his disposal.

In Iowa yesterday, “tough guy” Biden very intentionally claimed that Putin is engaged in genocide. Virtually every European leader distanced themselves from Biden’s remarks. French President Emmanuel Macron, locked in his own tough reelection campaign right now, said he would not repeat Biden’s accusation.

Macron sees Putin’s invasion as “brutal” and “madness,” but he urged Biden to be careful with his language. Macron said we should try “to rebuild peace.” He added, “I’m not sure that verbal escalations serve this cause.”

But “tough talk” combined with his typical weakness serves Biden’s cause. The danger is that his bombastic rhetoric and his ignorance of history can cause the heartbreaking devastation of Ukrainian cities to spread to cities in the rest of Europe.

I am no fan of Macron. But as a Frenchman, he knows the devastating toll of Europe’s land wars. In World War I, France lost two million people. France was occupied during World War II. England lost its empire, even though it was on the winning side.

The next few weeks could far surpass the savagery of the first 58 days of the Russian/Ukrainian war. May 9th is observed in Russia as Victory Day, marking the end of World War II, and honoring the 27 million Russians who died in that conflict. Putin will want to point to success in Ukraine on May 9th, just a few weeks away. 

As I write, there is an eight-mile convoy of Russian tanks headed into Donbas, and Ukrainian forces are massing to meet them.

We need, at a time like this, a sober, mentally competent president who understands strength and is prudent with his words. Instead, we have Joe “Come On Man” Biden with cackling Kamala Harris waiting in the wings.

Children of the (lack of) corn

Will it be:

Given the emergency situation created by grain disruptions due to the war in Ukraine, for humanity’s sake Republicans should take the lead in their own states and prioritize food production in policies and through moral suasion

We should ask of the politicians in this state — are they out to protect ethanol or people?  Farmers would be happy with the latter and should receive market prices for supplying their products to feed people efficiently.

It is crisis time. All marketing mandates, promotions and favored tax treatments for ethanol use as an automotive fuel should be ended.

Whether it is Joni Ernst or Charles Grassley or most other Republican personages in/from this state — they make political hay of late about food inflation and security  — rightly decrying Biden’s various inflationary edicts and pointing out the effects of the war in/on Ukraine as necessitating our aggressive support of Ukraine in order to stabilize food prices.

But ruminate on this letter from Joni Ernst (along with the other links provided) while trying to digest her and her fellow Iowans insistence that ethanol “market mandates” be instituted for ethanol’s use as motor fuel.

The disconnect is their promoting ethanol marketing requirements instead of calling for farm acreage to be used for food instead of  wasteful ethanol production to be burned in cars.

For humanity’s sake they should be calling on farm policy if anything to incentivize food production and disincentivize inefficient ethanol production. That should “incentivize” Biden’s people to open up domestic oil production.

If ethanol for fuel is so wonderful let the market pay the true cost based on zero subsidies or mandates of any sort. People know what is good for them.

Farmers should use the power of their ‘victory gardens’ by favoring those grain dealers who favor their products for food/feed production or limit their auctions or supply contracts to food production. Because of the current emergency farmers and grain merchants should be empowered to void those contracts already issued to ethanol manufacturers focused on internal combustion engine fuel mixtures.

Colorado is a red state — but not in a good way

Hard to comment on something so jaw-droppingly egregious as Colorado’s baby killing license. As regards abortion at any time for any reason Colorado has “progressed” from paterfamilias to materfamilias (or should we say “pregnant-person- familias). Regardless, child abandonment with prejudice.

Abortion in Colorado is not about not being pregnant it is entitlement to a dead baby. A poisoned, burned mutilated one is a choice. The facade of reason is not necessary, why even the concept of it is antithetical to the absolute right.

And the logic of death is relentless: Abortion, (Infanticide pre-birth) , infanticide after birth, assisted suicide, euthanasia. It is all happening under various guises now engendered by the first justifications for abortion on demand. Look for substituted judgement to be the “ethical” rubric for more killing of the defenseless.

Coloradans who do not protest this atrocity ought to be personna non grata in civilized states as appropriate as travel from terrorist enclaves.

Noted atheist (perhaps a more authentic humanist) David Harsanyi at Townhall appropriately describes:

The Most Radical Abortion Law in the Nation.

Jared Polis is often portrayed as a rational liberal whom the Democratic Party would be wise to emulate. One political writer recently argued that the Colorado governor was a “model of how you can build a coalition of the normal and decent.” It’s true that Polis was one of the first Democrats to shed the hysterical federal COVID regime. And his occasional pushback against fringe progressive economic ideas — the norm among Western Democrats not that long ago — certainly makes him seem less radical. Yet his support for what is likely the most extreme abortion law in America, maybe the world, should put an end to any talk about national office.

Colorado’s new law doesn’t merely allow abortion of viable babies, for any reason, until crowning; it makes eugenic arguments about the “social, moral, and economic benefits” of not having children, as if any law or regulation compels anyone to do so. The debate, lest it be repeated, is over when life is worth protecting. According to Colorado, which has no fetal-protection laws either, an unborn baby is never considered a life — so you can stop playing them that Baby Mozart.

Colorado’s new maximalist law not only ignores scientific and moral questions surrounding viability — which even Casey and Roe dealt with — it preventatively ensures that a “fetus does not have independent or derivative rights under the laws of the state,” stripping the unborn of any legal protection, in any circumstance. (Yes, third-trimester abortions are “rare.” Only around 10,000 of them are performed every year — so not rare enough. Warren Hern has been aborting completely viable babies in Boulder for decades; and surely, with even fewer restrictions, there will be another degenerate to take his place when he’s gone.)

The Colorado law also conflates the termination of an inconvenient life with a “fundamental right to use or refuse contraception,” a privilege no one is challenging. Treating abortion as if it holds the same societal cost and moral weight as buying a condom at CVS demonstrates the frivolous attitude the Left has taken, despite the law’s perfunctory pablum about it being a “serious decision” that should “remain between a person, their doctor, and their faith.”

Then again, the bill also betrays a frivolous radicalism by adopting pseudoscientific woke language. It refers to “pregnant individual(s)” rather than women.

Most headlines regarding the law were along the lines of “Colorado governor signs bill codifying the right to abortion in state law,” when a more precise wording would be “Colorado governor signs law codifying abortion under any circumstance until crowning.” Hiding the intent of abortion laws, pro or con, has become a political compulsion of the media. Why? Because since 1973, Gallup has found that the number of Americans who believe abortion should be legal “under any circumstance” remains between 22% and 34%. Yet this is the position of the contemporary Democratic Party (which is more predisposed to making exceptions for post-birth abortions than limiting late-term procedures). Nearly every poll that asks voters about post-viable abortions finds that they are deeply unpopular. That fact alone doesn’t make the procedure right or wrong. (It remains a homicide with or without democratic support.) But you would never know it from the coverage.

In the late ’60s, Colorado became the first state to decriminalize abortion in some cases. In the late ’70s, Colorado became the first state to set aside government funds to pay for abortions. In the early 2020s, Colorado became the first state to codify the individual right to an abortion up until the moment of birth for any reason. And Polis, the alleged reasonable Democrat, has his signature on the bill.

Jackson Confirmed
 
The Senate confirmed Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court this afternoon.  The vote, as expected, was 53-to-47.  Three Republican senators – Romney, Murkowski and Collins – joined all 50 Democrats to put on the Supreme Court. 
 
Don’t miss the significance of this vote . . . It’s not good.
 
To begin with, not a single Democrat – not “moderate” Manchin in West Virginia, not Tester in Montana, not “pro-life” Casey in Pennsylvania, not Ossoff or Warnock in Georgia or Kelly or Sinema in Arizona – voted against her.  
 
Every Democrat voted for a judge who can’t define “woman,” who rejects the Declaration of Independence, who routinely gave weak sentences to criminals charged with possessing child pornography and who was endorsed by radical activists who call our Constitution “trash.” 
 
But the three RINOs justified their votes by claiming Jackson was qualified, and had no scandals or ethical concerns.    
 
So, if anything should happen to one of the five clearly conservative justices on the Supreme Court now, these three senators would apparently vote with Democrats to put the left back in the majority of the only branch of government that is currently protecting our liberties.
 
That’s beyond disappointing.  It’s a betrayal, especially by Mitt Romney.
 
The Republican Party nominated Mitt Romney to be its presidential candidate in 2012.  He assured us he was “severely conservative” – whatever that means.  What a joke!  He was a disastrous candidate who gave us four more years of Barack Obama and Joe Biden. 
 
Let me remind you that Romney voted against Jackson just nine months ago to be one of 179 appellate court judges.  But now he believes she deserves a promotion to be one of nine Supreme Court justices?  That’s inexplicable!
 
The bottom line is that Mitt Romney can’t be trusted on anything.  He was unreliable on the life issue.  He rolled over and allowed marriage to be redefined in Massachusetts. 
 
Some say he has such a good character.  I disagree.  A person of good character does not play games with issues this important!

I hope the Ukraines beat the Russians. However, as outlined in this Victor Davis Hanson (VDH) article, History Should Be Our Guide in Ukraine  a no fly zone (enforced by us or NATO) is not a good idea. His comments provide much important perspective.

The Ukrainian resistance to the Russian invasion is admirable and inspiring from what we know from reports.  I support both giving some and loaning the Ukraines material support of both a civilian and military nature. But Western Europe is who should be primarily responsible for the great majority of all aid. This is not a situation of a lack of affected regional wealth.  We have our own very serious border interests, the situation is a ticking time-bomb in many ways including current deaths from an illegal invasion.  Mothers here  also weep for their children lost to drugs and gangs in great numbers. What about our sovereignty.

As VDH implies, let’s not get too sentimental about the players and how things have come to pass. Articles abound about corruption in Ukraine that has been going on for decades.   Further, knowing the Russian Bear at his doorstep, Ukraine’s Zelensky has made some “impolitic” statements intended to agitate Putin and this knowing that a compromised NATO and Biden are largely paper tigers. Zelensky had to know that the peaceful breakup of the Soviet Union and reunification of Germany was predicated on “secret” assurances by the US and other NATO members that NATO would not expand. Otherwise Gorbachev would have been less forthcoming. Picking a fight even if your supposed backup gives you a wink and a nod is stupid knowing the vulnerabilities of NATO and the leadership of the US. Roping us into a conflagration (Putin’s military might get desperate) is not friendship.

Putin is guilty of invading a sovereign country and our response ought to be punishing. That said, the question for us is how much do we back the play of a rather manipulative semi-dictator himself (here and here) who did not play his cards well and kinda got his people into this mess exhibiting the indiscretions of poking the Bear . . . or whether we support whatever wink and nod our manipulative swamp denizens gave Ukraine without Senate approval?  One of our first responses should be to fire their butts.

But for our part we can’t just let Russia win without consequences — but how much is our cost/ benefit vs that of free Europe?  That calculus ought to involve a fractional coefficient for us compared to “freedom loving” countries on the continent.  The United Kingdom has Nukes.  France has Nukes.  If anyone is to rattle sabers shouldn’t it be them?  And frankly I do not have confidence in our military leadership to lead any fight, but more on that in a follow up to the previous post.

Speaking of rattling sabers of the nuclear kind, consider these comments from Sean Hannity who I have found distressingly inconsistent of late.  My annotations in red typeface, bold my emphasis.

SEAN HANNITY: Vladimir Putin’s invasion is not going as planned. Now many Western officials fear the worst, including potential biological and chemical weapons attacks. Vladimir Putin keeps making nuclear threats, chemical weapons threats, bioweapon threats. Joe Biden and all of our NATO allies need to stop cowering at the words of Vladimir Putin. He makes a threat and you bubble and fizz is like Alka-Seltzer in water. In other words you are being intimidated, you are allowing yourself to be intimidated. Acting and looking kind of gutless. Lead all of our allies, Joey, and strongly tell Putin that you and all of our allies are united

Biden is no leader, why would you call for that Sean, and our allies are compromised and intimidated.

If he does cross that line and there is a nuclear attack, he will be met with a response ten times worse for him. Do we want that? Of course, we don’t want that. His troops and Russia will then be in the crosshairs if he crosses that line where NATO nations are impacted. Whatever you say it, you need to do.

Vladimir Putin is backed in a corner, he’s been embarrassed on the world stage. He’s anxious, clearly paranoid, angry, God only knows what he’ll do next. He has had no problem killing innocent men, women and children. By the way, NATO – not only the U.S., not the U.S. alone – they need to spell out what the immediate consequences will be because those weapons of war would trigger article five of the NATO alliance.

Putin’s soldiers have already leveled entire towns, blown up women and children’s hospitals. They bombed playgrounds, schools, shot peaceful protesters in the light of day, shot Ukrainians waiting in a bread line and use cluster bombs and hypersonic weapons to show off to the world as well. The U.S. embassy in Kyiv is accusing Russia of kidnappings over 2,000 Ukrainian children and shipping them across the border into Russia. So ask yourself what is stopping Putin from escalating this war even further with chemical or biological weapons? I hope he doesn’t, but here’s the question. Is the West, is NATO, is Joe ready to respond if he does? Do you have confidence in Joe Biden’s ability to respond appropriately? Because I don’t. Then why did you just admonish him to take charge Sean?

Hannity continues as reported by several outlets:

“If Vladimir Putin wanted to negotiate, he would have done it a long time ago,” Hannity said. “He’s not willing to, and if he wants to use chemical, biological, or nuclear weapons, he’s got to know that his entire country is going to get blown off the face of the Earth.”

Hannity spoke of innocent Ukrainian children and other civilians being slaughtered. There are non-combatants and children in Russia, by his own standards of outrage Hannity advocates indiscriminate slaughter, total war.  And what of the hypersonic missiles Putin fires off toward Long Island and Florida where you have residences Sean? Cut the bombast please, this is not the time.

To say the least it is a delicate situation.  I have hope that economic sanctions by countries who appreciate their own sovereignty and the costs inflicted by Ukraine on Russia will cause Putin to back off. But it must be realized the matter is not over. There have been regrettable mixed messages sent by the Biden Administration regarding Chinese and Russian hegenomy.  There must be a commitment to serious overwhelming strategic military buildup unilaterally by us and hopefully by “freedom loving” Europeans.  That is a course to give Russia and China pause.      R Mall

White House does not confirm plans to end Title 42

The Biden administration is planning to scrap a Trump-era public health policy restricting illegal immigration by May 23 — despite repeated warnings from Democratic lawmakers who represent border states, according to multiple reports.

White House director of communications Kate Bedingfield did not confirm the plans reported by CNN and the Associated Press when asked by reporters Wednesday, referring the matter to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Title 42 is a public health directive,” Bedingfield said. “It is not an immigration or migration enforcement measure.”

“We have every expectation that when the CDC ultimately decides it’s appropriate to lift Title 42, there will be an influx of people to the border,” Bedingfield added. “And so we are doing a lot of work to plan for that contingency.”

Title 42 has been in place since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and allows border officials to immediately expel migrants who attempt to cross the border without allowing them a chance to claim asylum. The policy has been used to expel migrants more than 1.7 million times, according to official estimates.

Lifting Title 42 would restore border officials’ obligations to take in asylum-seekers until their claims can be adjudicated.

When President Biden took office, he vowed to roll back many immigration policies put in place by the Trump administration, including Title 42. However, multiple state and federal court rulings have kept the policy in place. 

“If the CDC were to rescind its Title 42 order at this time, Border Patrol facilities and local communities would be forced to absorb at least double the current number of migrants, likely with catastrophic results.”

Sens. Kyrsten Sinema and Mark Kelly, both Arizona Democrats, issued a similar warning last week, citing the projected impacts on local communities and border security. 

“Given the impacts that changes to Title 42 could have on border communities, border security, and migrants, we urge your Administration not to make any changes to Title 42 implementation until you are completely ready to implement and coordinate a comprehensive plan that ensures a secure, orderly, and humane process at the border,” they said. 

“Different sectors and border communities will require different resources, so the plan must be developed in consultation with local government leaders and community organizations, including those providing services to migrants. Such groups in Arizona have not been consulted about Title 42 changes. Until the administration does that type of consultation with local government leaders and nonprofits along the border, it is premature to consider changes to Title 42 authorities.”

This month, the White House indicated it would only rescind the order if the CDC determined it should be scrapped. 

The Department of Homeland Security has recently made several efforts to amp up its manpower along the southern border, requesting help from the Pentagon, CBP and internal volunteers.

With the lifting of the order, officials are bracing for a potential influx of up to 170,000 people, with up to 13,000 unaccompanied children crossing the border in May alone. 

The number of attempted border crossings for the month of March is expected to be high, and will likely surpass February’s number of 165,000, as hundreds of Ukrainian and Russian refugees have joined migrants looking to cross the southern border. 

Brandon Judd, president of the National Border Council, warned on Tuesday that removing Title 42 will put the US in “serious trouble.” 

“Illegal immigration is going to explode even more if Title 42 goes away,” Judd told The Post, adding that 52% of all immigrants at the southern border this month were directly expelled under the order.

*such as say another Katrina impacting refineries along the Gulf Coast or some other event impacting more than one key part of petroleum infrastructure. Heaven forbid we increase production.

Regarding Maine and how stupid the polity is there, the natives have an excuse. It is called open borders.  Portland and the southern areas have been bedroom communities for Boston for decades and the media is dominated by Boston. Not much more need be said. Colorado became Californicated . . . Maine has been Massticated.  Liberals have a tendency to flee their own policies. Texans and Floridians stand fast, don’t take any shit from any of your lessers.
