U.of Notre Dame’s Jenkins faith should be questioned

From Yahoo news:

Notre Dame disassociates itself from Lou Holtz’s RNC comments questioning Joe Biden’s Catholic faith

Notre Dame wants to make it clear that it doesn’t endorse what Lou Holtz said about former Vice President Joe Biden at the Republican National Convention.

Holtz spoke Wednesday night at the RNC and said that Biden was a Catholic “in name only.” Biden, a Catholic, has cited his faith as a constant throughout his life.

“One of the important reasons [President Donald Trump] has my trust is because nobody is but a stronger advocate for the unborn than President Trump,” Holtz said. “The Biden-Harris ticket is the most radically pro-abortion campaign in history. They and other politicians are Catholics in name only and abandon innocent lives. President Trump protects those lives. I trust President Trump.”

Holtz led into his line about trust in Trump by citing his time at Notre Dame and the fact that there’s a statue of him at the school.

Thursday, Fr. John Jenkins, the president of Notre Dame, issued a statementthat said people should not question the sincerity of others’ faith and that Holtz’s previous employment at the school “must not be taken to imply” that Notre Dame endorsed his views.

“While Coach Lou Holtz is a former coach at Notre Dame, his use of the University’s name at the Republican National Convention must not be taken to imply that the University endorses his views, any candidate or any political party,” Jenkins said. “Moreover, we Catholics should remind ourselves that while we may judge the objective moral quality of another’s actions, we must never question the sincerity of another’s faith, which is due to the mysterious working of grace in that person’s heart. In this fractious time, let us remember that our highest calling is to love.”

Holtz was a college football head coach for 33 seasons. He coached at Notre Dame from 1986-1996 and the Fighting Irish went 100-30-2 in his tenure. The Irish went undefeated in 1988 and were the No. 1 team in the postseason AP poll after a win in the Fiesta Bowl.

AFTER KENOSHA MAYBE NOW THE LEFT HAS THEIR “HEROES”

  • Anthony Huber and Joseph Rosenbaum fit the ANTIFA personae (articles below)
  • One or the other seems to have violated Rule 1: Don’t chase and threaten a guy who has a gun, Rule2: don’t menacingly dare someone to shoot you
  • Though young Kyle Rittenhouse is charged with murder, there are many facts yet to be learned (some video makes a pretty good case for ‘self-defense’)
  • Wisconsin Governor: “we don’t need no fed help”
  • BLM genius – it ain’t stealing or arson if its insured

(Since we originally wrote this opinion, events have accelerated the leftist agenda.)

———-

IT IS THE FERVENT HOPE OF THE RADICAL LEFT LEADERS OF ANTIFA AND BLACK LIVES MATTER THAT ONE OF THESE FOOLS WILL GET THEMSELVES KILLED WHILE RIOTING !

– WATCH FOR IT! ONE OF THESE IDIOTS WILL THROW A BAG OF EXCREMENT (THAT’S “S–T” FOR ALL YOU ‘ENLIGHTENED LIBERALS’) IN THE FACE OF A COP OR A LEGALLY ARMED CIVILIAN, AND BE SHOT DEAD ON THE SPOT.

(Is there any one of you who may read this, think that, were you the target of that ‘bag’, and were legally armed, would not react reflexively in a similar way? (If not…I wouldn’t want you in my ‘foxhole’).

———–

– Few of the woefully ignorant, or ill-educated “protesters” suspect that that’s the real intent (a dead rioter) of the America-hating radical left “brains” behind this long planned, attempted overthrow of the United States of America.

– How ‘great’ would it be if the left got its “George Floyd 2.0” … an “innocent” Black “Divinity student”, a white liberal fascist, or at least one individual with a long rap sheet who has “turned his/her/its life around”, “gunned down” by a ‘racist’ NRA supporter/or ‘a systemically racist’ police officer/or ‘racist’ white supremacist, or, simply, a Trump voter, or….”

– the funeral, we expect, would be bigger than the Aretha Franklin/George Floyd/ John Lewis/ Elijah Cummings rites combined!

– the ensuing riots would dwarf Watts/Portland/the ’68 MLK Holy Week/’92 LA riots, also all combined

– Nancy, Kamala, and the ‘Sleepy One’ would twerk like ‘nobody’s business’

– It’s coming…even if the left must do it itself….

Man Who Attacked Kyle Rittenhouse With Skateboard Convicted For Domestic Abuse, Twice

Anthony Huber, the man police say was shot by Kyle Rittenhouse after he attacked him with a skateboard during the Kenosha, Wisconsin riots, is has two separate convictions that stem from domestic violence charges, and served prison time for his offenses.

Video suggests Huber was the man who attacked Rittenhouse with a skateboard as the alleged shooter attempted to flee the scene after shooting another man, convicted pedophile Joseph Rosenbaum. As Rittenhouse ran toward police vehicles approaching the scene, Rosenbaum and others appear to have tackled Rittenhouse. One man attacked him with a skateboard, while another man had a pistol.

Huber was arrested in 2012 for charges including domestic violence, “Use of Dangerous Weapon,” “Strangulation & Suffocation,” “False Imprisonment,” and battery. He was ultimately convicted of strangling and falsely imprisoning a person.

Huber was sentenced to two years in prison, and was credited for 352 days served during his case. He was released from probation for this conviction in May of 2020.

Then, in 2018, after Huber was released from prison but still on probation for his 2012 conviction, he was arrested for domestic abuse, disorderly conduct, and battery. He was ultimately convicted and sentenced to probation.

Huber was also caught in possession of drug paraphernalia, which is not a criminal offense in the state of Wisconsin, in 2015.

While GoFundMe banned a campaign raising money for Rittenhouse, but recently promoted Huber’s campaign on its official corporate Twitter account.

What will be the ‘spark’ that inflames (Insert name of community here) ?

. . . Black Lives Matter (BLM) terrorists are standing by

It’s a pretty good bet that in most major cities, and in smaller ones, especially those with a significant Black populations, and a college nearby, already have hidden stockpiles of rocks, various incendiary devices, potentially lethal fireworks, some personal protective gear (maybe hardhats), bags to fill with excrement, etc

The community is also likely to have its share of gullible, immature young people, poorly served by their respective educational systems and institutions, and leftist-indoctrinating teachers.

Like a highly combustible pile of rubbish, many a (Democrat-managed) community in America awaits just that spark…maybe only a rumor, maybe a small event to be blown wildly out of proportion, maybe a truly horrific act by a fearful, or hateful, or incompetent individual with a badge…any event or action that a well-organized domestic terrorist group can turn into an occasion of frenzied destruction and mayhem against innocent Americans, all for the purpose of tearing the nation apart…and rebuilding it as a totalitarian horror show.

The dynamic was first initiated 11 years ago (July 23, 2009 to be exact), when an irresponsible president (and it wasn’t Trump) said:

“I don’t know, not having been there and not seeing all the facts, what role race played in that,” Mr. Obama continued. “But I think it’s fair to say, No. 1, any of us would be pretty angry; No. 2, that the Cambridge police acted stupidly in arresting somebody when there was already proof that they were in their own home; and No. 3, what I think we know separate and apart from this incident is there is a long history in this country of African-Americans and Latinos being stopped by police disproportionately. That’s just a fact.”

With that in mind, mindless mobs can be activated, based on incomplete information or simply rumor, by evil organizations who need not “see all the facts”…; if a president doesn’t need to know the facts before charging that our police, with a “long history” of racist behavior, “act stupidly” , why shouldn’t naive, indoctrinated liberals be able to attack innocent citizens, loot their property, destroy their livelihoods, take their lives?

Hope it is not coming soon to your town.         dlh

But the effect  of the riots these past weeks months may keep the Dem leadership in line but similar events helped propel the hated Richard Nixon to election and re-election.

Anti-hydroxychloroquine propaganda – follow the money trail

This article offers compelling insight as to why an inexpensive treatment regime for COVID-19, the Wuhan virus, involving hydroxychloroquine is handicapped, even blocked in favor of current less effective treatments or the promise of a vaccine.  We suggest bringing the article to the attention of the Iowa Board of Medicine by sending the link  (see previous post)  and insist they show cause for their policy medical-logical-ethical and respond to the charges.

Playing Games With COVID Treatments?

We can no longer avoid questions about the elevation of Remdesivir and suppression of hydroxychloroquine.

Deborah Hutchins

By

The French virologist Dr. Didier Raoult, who early in the pandemic successfully treated COVID-19 patients with hydroxychloroquine, has issued an “expression of concern” excoriating the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine for publishing dubious studies.

In trenchant terms, Raoult calls out the journal for publishing studies with such egregious flaws that the practices would not pass muster at his teaching hospital in Marseille. He highlights, for instance, the most obvious limitation of a widely touted study claiming to show that hydroxychloroquine treatment does not prevent COVID-19: Less than 3 percent of the study participants had a confirmed diagnosis.

The RECOVERY trial, published in the journal and celebrated for showing that dexamethasone improves survival in hospitalized patients, was no major breakthrough. Anti-inflammatory steroids help patients in respiratory distress, and hospital protocols that include steroids in COVID-19 treatment were already the norm elsewhere.

Why even run such a study, asks Raoult, let alone withhold treatment from patients in the control group? Scandalously, in another arm of the study, these investigators overdosed patients with toxic levels of hydroxychloroquine, then dismissed the drug as useless.

Failures of Remdesivir

Contrast that to the receptiveness to Remdesivir. Following the journal’s publication of preliminary findings, the experimental drug was declared a “game changer.” The trial, however, showed only modest results. When the main outcome measure, a reduction in deaths, failed to reach statistical significance, a secondary outcome, time to hospital discharge, was elevated as a measure of recovery. Hospital stays were shortened from 15 to 11 days on average.

A companion study of patients treated with Remdesivir for either five or 10 days, however, should give pause. A four-fold higher rate of acute kidney injury occurred with the longer treatment, an outcome not readily discerned when major and minor adverse events are reported in aggregate.

Did the journal editors or peer reviewers express any concern? One hears nothing of this finding from the medical establishment, the regulatory agencies, nor the news media. By contrast, an observational study of severely ill hospitalized patients, in which hydroxychloroquine statistically halved the death rate even after correcting for factors such as steroid use, was pronounced “flawed.”

Thus Remdesivir, a failed Ebola drug repurposed for COVID-19, is declared the standard of care by a National Institutes of Health (NIH) panel, the members of which have financial ties to the manufacturer, Gilead Sciences. The same panel duly notes the hydroxychloroquine study results yet “recommends against” using the drug except in clinical trials.

Sadly, this phenomenon is not new. Fifteen years ago, a survey of 200 expert panels that issued practice guidelines found that a third of the members had a financial interest in the drug under consideration.

Effectiveness of Hydroxychloroquine

Antiviral drugs such as Remdesivir and hydroxychloroquine work best early in the disease, as they block cell infection, viral replication, or both. Although Remdesivir should stop the virus from replicating, one study found it failed to reduce viral loads. By contrast, hydroxychloroquine (ideally given with zinc) reduces viral loads and helps prevent COVID-19 from developing into a serious illness.

Moreover, the hysteria over hydroxychloroquine’s safety is hyperbole: Decades of evidence indicate safe use under a doctor’s care. A hospital study to address this specific issue found the drug to be safe for COVID-19 patients with cardiovascular disease, the very patients for whom there may be a concern.

Suppressing early treatment with hydroxychloroquine based on the lack of randomized prospective trials is unwarranted. Dr. Thomas Frieden, former head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, argued against excessive reliance on such data while discounting other worthwhile and sometimes superior evidence.

If the need for a large prospective trial on hydroxychloroquine is the main roadblock, why hasn’t the NIH already sponsored one? Multinational coalitions have called for such a study. No doubt the American public would consider this a worthy use of taxpayer money.

Few people recognize that most of the funding for clinical trials comes from the pharmaceutical industry and that the industry deeply influences their conduct. Nor is it widely known that two-thirds of the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) budget for evaluating prescription drugs comes from the industry it regulates.

Even less apparent is that federal legislation allows institutions supported by federal grants to patent and license new products. Investigators are handsomely remunerated through consulting fees, equity in the pertinent companies, and patent and royalty agreements.

Follow the Money

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, a branch of the NIH led by Dr. Anthony Fauci, sponsored the multicenter trial of Remdesivir. Remdesivir is experimental, expensive, scarce, and administered by intravenous injection. Hydroxychloroquine is off-patent, cheap, widely available, and taken orally. Yet the FDA granted an emergency use authorization for Remdesivir but revoked such authorization for hydroxychloroquine and will not allow the hospitals that saved patients to keep using it.

Why stymie a treatment that is pragmatic, affordable, helps ill patients, and could reduce the need for hospitalization? Spurred by such obvious considerations, a current lawsuit demands that the FDA remove its hydroxychloroquine restrictions. Three U.S. senators now request that the FDA provide evidence to justify its apparent conclusion that the drug is unsafe or ineffective when used early under a doctor’s care.

Pharmaceutical giants such as Gilead Sciences have major stakes in the global financial industry. Drug companies are known to promote their products and marginalize naysayers by covertly controlling the public narrative. Independent journalist Sharyl Attkisson attempted to examine the controversy in depth, but Fauci and Gilead Sciences declined her interview requests.

What to make of this state of affairs? Dr. Marcia Angell, former editor of the New England Journal of Medicine, offers this sobering assessment:

It is simply no longer possible to believe much of the clinical research that is published, or to rely on trusted physicians or authoritative medical guidelines. I take no pleasure in this conclusion, which I reached slowly and reluctantly over my two decades as an editor of The New England Journal of Medicine.

When will we witness unblemished science, probing journalism, and a true commitment to the common good? Alas, Dr. Raoult, they abuse our patience indeed.

Physician’s Petition to Iowa Board of Medicine re hydroxychloroquine

The following document download is sourced from David Hartsuch MD, former State Senator who is an Emergency Medicine Physician and who also holds an advanced degree in medical statistics.  He knows his way around numbers, but is also obviously concerned about individual patients.

Reading his petition and the Iowa Board of Medicine statement/policy that he objects to we find his case for the removal of restrictions for physicians on the use of hydroxychloroquine compelling as to its focus — treatment of a virus that can present a serious medical condition and aggravation.  Dr. Hartsuch accepts or at least does not argue the policies in place regarding transmissibility the virus.  We have read focused reports in that regard that challenge overwrought policies.   Again his focus is on treatment and the appropriateness of the Iowa Board edicts. We believe his efforts should be supported by citizens contacting the Iowa Board of Medicine as set forth below:

The Iowa Board of Medicine will be considering my petition to the Board concerning the use of Hydroxychloroquine in Iowa.  This is by phone meeting and the public will be allowed to comment.
Time: Friday 8/28/2020 9:00 am
Phone:  1-866-685-1580
User code :971-913-4151

The Board needs to know that the public demands full access to this life saving drug, and they need to fully rescind their “Joint Statement” regarding hydroxychloroquine of March 26th,2020.  Decisions about Iowans health should be based upon science not politics.  Physicians should be allowed to freely decide with their patients the best treatment for this deadly disease.  Iowans should not be allowed to die over the political ambitions of the Board.

If you would like to drop (a note) to Kent Nebel, director of the Iowa Board of medicine his email is:  kent.nebel@Iowa.gov

I have attached a copy of my petition.
Thank you,

Sen. David Hartsuch MD MS
Emergency Resources, PLC

The most pro-abortion ticket and platform the Democrats have ever produced

To be sacrificed by prominent Catholics on their election altar devoted to Democrats

You can bet that many Bishops and other Catholic clergy and leadership will equivocate about abortion and the right to life as their true religion is big government socialism, however Godless it presents itself

Americans React To Kamala Harris’s Call For Post-20 Week Abortions With Pictures Of Their 20-Week-Olds

People are sharing photos of their children at 20 weeks gestation after a tweet from Sen. Kamala Harris in 2018 resurfaced, in which she advocated against a ban on abortions past 20 weeks.

Many people tweeted photos and sonograms of their children at 2o weeks old gestation or earlier, denouncing Harris’s pro-abortion platform and call for a ban.

Others shared photos of babies prematurely born around 20 weeks, fully developed and alive.

Harris is a longtime pro-abortion activist with a long congressional record supporting the movement. She voted against the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act and was a co-sponsor of the Women’s Health Protection Act, which allows abortions without bans. Harris has also notably called for Congress to pass a law affirming the Roe v. Wade ruling in 1973.

Harris even received an informal endorsement from Planned Parenthood Action on Twitter.

She also has a 100 percent rating from NARAL Pro-Choice America, a pro-abortion activism group.

While Biden has not been as active as Harris in abortion activism, he said that his presidential platform includes ending the Hyde Amendment, which blocks federal funding of abortions as well as ensuring “safe, legal access to abortion by establishing nationwide protections for abortion that would stand even if Roe v. Wade were overturned by the Supreme Court.”

According to the Mayo Clinic, at 20 weeks, babies in the womb have all of their body parts and become more active in the womb by “regularly sleeping and waking” and becoming “awakened by noises or your movements.” Scientific research also shows that babies can feel pain very early in the womb, suggesting that an abortion would cause immense physical harm and suffering to the baby before death if performed.

Derecho meets wind farms

So there we were driving back from Des Moines along I-80 on Sunday afternoon and did a casual survey of wind damage after the recent (August 10) dericho the area experienced.  Granted the most intense winds were somewhat north of I80 but the suggestion of corn and soybean crop damage in the millions of acres and billions of dollars seemed a little extravagant. Satillite pictures of pre and post dericho seem unreliable as the pre-storm photos of a month earlier are of naturally greener crops as right now we are in a dry spell.

The beans (percentage-wise) looked largely unaffected to our non-expert eye and the corn visible (to the same eye) from I80 ranged from 95+% upright( stalks not broken or roots exposed) to some spots laid down and abnormally wilted). Even a fairly early report from the farm journal AgWeb indicated “the damage may not dent corn supply“.  To be sure there was a lot of damage from the “once-a-decade” event with winds equivalent to a EF3 tornado — to buildings, other structures and from power outages.

Stock photo from referenced article, not of Iowa but similar in scope

Speaking of which we could not help but notice the two (or is it one?) wind farms along the way visible from the interstate. The collection of dozens of individual wind generators, along roughly mile markers 205 to 217 (west of Morengo) were all still.  The group west of that were rotating slowly due to the minimal breeze on this 95 degree day when one would expect peak demand. We were impressed that they all were standing but not with the percentage of idleness.

The Marengo field appeared under development so maybe they were not all online as yet, but given the expansiveness of the field we would expect some to be connected and rotating and presumably online if needed as the more westerly field appeared to be.

Our conclusion is that in spite of the  electrical demand on a very hot day the wind generation was not needed. Power outages at this date were down to a small percentage of customers in the state and were located in counties north of the area so that demand would seem irrelevant to the discussion.

So where would Iowa power customers/taxpayers  be without wind farms? No worse better off as power needs seem to be met with idle windmills on a very hot day. Here is an article from 6 years ago in a publication The Conversation, that is championed by the likes of “strategic partner” The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and also the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Ford Foundation and other known liberal cause money sources:

Congress shouldn’t revive the failed policy of subsidizing wind farms

The ‘money” quote from the article in our observation:

why would an energy company bother investing in other technologies when it can collect a tax credit that equals one-third of the average cost of producing electricity to power homes and offices? Which then allows them to sell its power output at a loss of $35 per megawatt hour and still turn a profit?

The answer is they won’t, and the losers are many: taxpayers, other renewable energy developers and the environment. Keep in mind—the examples of potentially better uses of all those tax credits are not necessarily economically efficient solutions either (nor are they the only alternative options). But they are unlikely to be explored as long as power companies can game the wind subsidy system.

A riskless bet

The PTC turns a weak technology into a riskless bet, encouraging energy companies to spend their limited renewable budgets on subsidy farming rather than the best prospective solutions. The major players in the US wind industry will continue their efforts of subsidy-seeking

Push for absentee voting is a first cousin of vote by mail

This Kurt Schlichter article at Townhall condenses many of the implications of the push for vote by mail. But read our supplemental comment as well (to be expanded in coming posts)

Of course, the whole idea behind vote by mail – the untargeted mass mailing of ballots out into the world that can be harvested by political operatives who all the best and smartest people tell us would never, ever cheat – is to make cheating easier. It’s to steal the election, and that’s why they are accusing Trump of cheating by trying to stop them from cheating. It’s an exercise in remarkable cynicism, but hey, they are, after all, our moral betters. We know because they never cease to tell us.

Also, underlying this bizarre and stupid conspiracy theory is more Democrat rent seeking for a beloved constituency. The postal workers’ union is a loyal Democrat adjunct and has naturally endorsed Grandpa Badfinger. Yeah, we’re supposed to trust the election to a bunch of partisan players for some reason – and the USPS is collapsing. It needs yet another bailout. Technology has changed how you correspond. You do it by email now. When was the last time you wrote a letter? You get paid electronically. Who gets a mailed Social Security check in 2020? The postal system, however, remains in many critical ways, essentially unchanged from a century ago. And that’s the way its participants and its Democrat patrons want it.

Associated purposes for the push, because of the known chaos it will produce in many areas, by delaying results, is to give plenty of time for found (Democrat) ballots and or to denigrate a Trump victory as illegitimate due to insufficient support for the USPS (a lie) and to engender riots as the further back-up plan. The Dems kind of figure they are not going to win the presidency outright but they have to do something to help the down-ticket communists and to preserve the rancor against Trump.

The Wuhan scare used to justify extensive absentee voting (by mail) is the next best thing to universal vote by mail and Republicans are helping with it.  More later.

Follow-up to Republicans GOTV effort

Reader TN reports his deceased mother of ten years received the same voter registration request from the Republican Party of Iowa, the leadership also now being all in for emphasizing absentee voting through the mail.  Don’t let them tell you vote by mail is a whole lot different from their extravagant efforts to push absentee voting over the years. The security and fraud problems are still present. The apparat apparently has nothing better to say or do then zombie-on about voting absentee.
